@Friendica Support I seem to be having trouble subscribing to kbin magazines from Friendica. See the linked conversation below.

@ernest Interestingly enough, it works from Mastodon, but not Friendica. I shall have to inform support.

...which *does* seem to work if I put it in the search bar.

@Tin So, it seems that once I put a magazine's URL into the search bar, it starts recognizing the handle, but not before, which is interesting.

I guess the root problem is that searching using the @user@host format only works if the node is already aware of that account, otherwise you need the full profile URL. I can work with that, but it's annoying (particularly on small nodes like mine).

@Jonathan Lamothe this is why relays are a good thing to set up, especially when you're not already following a lot of people.

You can find some relays to add from these sites:

@Tin Sure, bit that involves knowing the instance URL, which I usually do, bit sometimes I don't. Also, my goal for this node is to make it as low-friction an introduction point for friends and family to the fediverse as possible.

@Jonathan Lamothe @Tin I think this is not unreasonable to put in a github issue as maybe a feature request?

I'm with you on that as I likewise want my server to be as low friction as possible. I've got several requests in there to get things some things smoothed out.

Unfortunately Friendica is far from the smoothest experience, in large part because of a lack of UI designers contributing.

Friendica Nodes learn about contacts (users in the Fediverse) about interactions.
If you are having a small or even a private node, it probably don´t know much contacts in the fediverse.
Adding a relay at least improves your chances to know more contacts on small instances (that´s what realys are for - it´s actually made for small instances which aren´t good connected).

@Raroun Sure, but my core issue here is that given a @user@host handle, it should be able to use webfinger to look up the profile URL (assuming the remote server's implemented it properly). I've always been able to do this in the past.
