Looks like I need to stop being lazy and finally upgrade to #Debian 12.
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

I upgraded one server, no issues.
I lost my firewall rules, but that might have been an error on my part.
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

I only use a desktop and a laptop, both as workstations. No servers at all.

@El Cucuy Debian is a strong, good old distro. It gives me all I need. I use it since many years (version 5.x).
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

@Jonathan Lamothe are you refering to unitiy, from good ole ubuntu and switching in between them (on startup)?or sticking with one? got sway, btw?
in reply to El Cucuy

@El Cucuy Yeah, I was using Ubuntu until last year, where I just stuck with Unity. I tend to stick with a particular DE for a fairly extended period of time, until I have a reason to change. In the case of the switch from KDE to XFCE, it was resource usage.

@zebulon 1ᵉʳ, dit "le maudit" how are you managing upgrades, since so many years?always starting from scratch, when a new major is out, with a backup,or...?
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

@Jonathan Lamothe totally get your point! have you looked into lxde?it's even lighter, than our beloved xfce,we are considering resource consumption..
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

@El Cucuy
(as root)

# apt-get check
# apt update
# apt full-upgrade

If required, I reboot.

When a new distro is out, I modify my /etc/apt/sources.list to change the distro name to the new one.
Also, other files I have put in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/, if needed.
Then I do the same as above. AND reboot (two reboots if needed).

If I need to remake a full install (eg I doesn't work any more -- too much broken things), I use the same username and password, AND DO NOT format /home (that always use another partition than /, which will be formated). And I install on the old install.

@zebulon 1ᵉʳ, dit "le maudit" thanks for sharing! appreciate it!! is your stuff kept primarily local? or scaled out in the cloud?
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

@El Cucuy: 2 servers, one desktop. I keep the desktop on testing.
One of the servers runs OpenMediaVault, which is tied to a specific Debian version. (Currently 11, will be upgraded when the next OMV is released.)
I keep the other server on stable.

@zebulon 1ᵉʳ, dit "le maudit" I have a cheap VPS, but I run anything important on a local machine and port forward using SSH tunnels and a Wireguard VPN.
