So, it's come to my attention that when I upload a photo to Friendica, the exif data is not automatically stripped out of it, as had been my assumption. Is there some setting that I can change to correct this behaviour? Looks like I've been broadcasting my address with nearly every photo I've posted.

I can't put the genie back in the bottle, but I can at least stop broadcasting it.
@Jonathan Lamothe go to your settings and you can find a way to turn that off

@Shelenn Ayres I've looked. The closest I can find is:
Settings โžก๏ธ Additional Features โžก๏ธ General Features โžก๏ธ Photo Location
(which is unchecked)
Metadata is still not being stripped.

@Andreas Kilgus @Shelenn Ayres That's the same impression I get, but it's the closest thing I could find. It does say that the data is normally stripped, though (in the English version, at least).

you could strip it out before upload. Depends on your camera.

That said โ€ฆ now I have to check my own photos โ€ฆ

@fyrfli ^ This. You can use Exif Cleaner on Linux, or ScrambledExif/ImagePipe on Android. I know there are solutions for other platforms, too, but I'm not super familiar. Anything that basically acts as a frontend for MAT2 (Metadata Anonymization Tool) is a great option.

I mean, I suppose. It's extra steps, but they try to make it convenient. For example, with the Android apps, you find the picture in your gallery, tap share, select the exif cleaning app, then the share menu pops right back up and you pick your Friendica client. It just automatically wipes it and then drops it wherever you want. You don't even have to open the app.

On desktop, it's slightly more involved but you just drag a picture into it and click a button. Then it's clean and you can upload it.

I've often wondered if there's some kind of "photo washing" app/program that exists to prevent these kinds of accidents before a photo leaves your device.

@tastytea Oof! Seems the feature request has been stuck since late 2019: https://github.com/friendica/friendica/issues/7653

I use jhead -purejpg *.jpg to strip all tags before uploading. If I don't forget it..
