@MichaelKlamerus i love it. it feels like a cozy anticapitalist anti-big-tech counterculture thing

@MichaelKlamerus I remember adding "the right" link circle to my Geocities sites back in the day. And then I had to research "the correct" size for a link button. I love that this is experiencing a resurgence.

yes, anything that makes the web feel less like it's just 3-4 websites and also makes it a little weirder is a bonus to me

@reidrac all self hosted sites are cool sites

im gonna be honest i didn't think i would be that into having my own self hosted blog when i started setting it up. i viewed it as a way to test drive another static site generator (publii) since i wasn't that happy with jekyll

but i set it up in a day, the only thing i had to pay for was my domain name because publii integrates with netlify and i use their free tier for hosting. and now i have my own place on the web that i have control over, that some shitty billionaire isn't going to ruin* overnight, and where if i wanna have a wall of 88x31 buttons with links to other sites that are also enjoying this same kind of freedom, i can just do that. nobody can tell me i can't. nobody can tell me what to do. it's my own space, for me and all my friends

and that's actually a really great feeling

* because if publii gets enshittified, all my stuff is in markdown so i can switch generators, and if netlify goes away i can just get another host

Rediscovering the joys of the internet before we had terms like "Web2.0" or whatever. Yay.

Also I'm already mentally pronouncing "publii" like "pube-ly" so it's only a matter of time.

I've been looking for something like publii! My current site is a little too IE6-compatible for my liking and I've been looking for something more modern to switch to. Thanks for posting this!

@yoshimcf you're welcome! i'm having a pretty decent experience with it so far, although it does have its annoying quirks. but what site generator doesn't

Self-host blog with your own customisation gives such a freedom of just doing the thing instead of roleplaying a goblin SEO on drugs.

I used to run a blog which then became a devblog for my first games, never had much readers but it was very fun and helped me sort my toughts and ideas 😀
