@me @stux There do exist rumors of someone who preceded Gagarin but didn't survive. I do not remember the name.
The USSR "cheated", after all. They claimed an altitude record with Gagarin's flight, but MANY years later we learnt it was bogus. Recovery was actually by Gagarin bailing out and parachuting, so it did not count.
