Haha, that's a memory I wasn't expecting to dredge up! I never went so far as to wash them, but well do I remember cleaning the crud out of many a mouse a mouse in university computer rooms!

I have a whole bag full of old mouse balls. A place I used to work threw out a lot of old mice and I collected the balls, thinking they could be useful for something in the future.

Heavy, smooth, rubber coated, with a uniform size. Some day I will figure out what to do ๐Ÿ˜

I was in the meeting when the head sysadmin for a large university dumped a box of mouse balls onto a conference room table.

"You turned down my request for optical mice.
You want to know why trouble tickets take so long and I can't get projects finished?
Here's why. Two hundred mouse balls replaced this quarter, thousands cleaned and serviced.
Every time one of my staff touches a mouse with a ball, it costs twice what a modern ball-less mouse would cost.
Every time you cut my capex, you pay twice that in opex."

A truly epic scene.
He got his budget request.

Ugh, and that stupid fiber-like formation of hairs and gunk that would form on the rollers was so hard to get off even with a q-tip... Actually, it was, more than anything else, the biggest culprit in reducing mouse accuracy. I never actually had to do any of the rest there, just get that off the rollers.

I never did the "dunking into cleaning solution" thing. I cleaned it with a wipe, and *maybe* ran it under water and patted it dry. Cleaning solution? What kind of fancy-pants mouse balls are you cleaning over there? ๐Ÿ˜‚

Funny enough, I'm slightly too young to have had to clean them, but I did use them and opened one up once as a young child (as opposed to when I was older but still a child, as I used optical mice by then).

qtips Oo oh so quaint ๐Ÿคฃ

We would go in with toothpicks, needles or anything pointy enough to scrape the wheels clean, like real little punks!

Fineeeee,
You got me.
But it did it only once and only because it bloody stopped working completely.

Youngsters these days don't know how good they have it.

There was a wry email about being circulated it back in the day -

Mouse balls are now available as FRU (FieldReplacement Unit) therefore, if a mouse fails to operate or should it perform erratically, it may need a ball replacement. Because of the delicate nature of this procedure, replacement of mouse balls should only be attempted by properly trained personnel. Before proceeding, determine the type of mouse balls by examining the underside of the mouse. Domestic balls will be larger and harder than foreign balls.

Ball removal procedures differ depending upon the manufacturer of the mouse. Foreign balls can be replaced using the pop off method. Domestic balls are replaced by using the twist-off method.

Mouse balls are not usually static sensitive. However, excessive handling can result in sudden discharge.

Upon completion of ball replacement, the mouse may be used immediately. It is recommended that each replacer have a pair of spare balls for maintaining optimum customer satisfaction. Any customer missing his balls should suspect local personnel of removing these necessary items.

This applies to most millennials too, especially if we were online before 2002 say- when the laser mice started really taking off. I was using Windows 95 in the mid 90s when I was far too young, that Minesweeper game was far too mature for me to be playing.

I liked the weight of those mouse balls, very satisfyingly heavy.

Virtua Cop 2 with a mouse was great, that I miss.

nine times out of ten it wasn't the ball that was dirty, but the build up on the little wheels that transfered movement from the ball to the rotary encoders for the X and Y movement

spent many an hour taking mice apart in the workshop to clean all the little rollers and encoders to save the company a small fortune

we had a stack of mouse boxes in the corner to put the cleaned mice in to make users think they were getting a new one, then bring the box back, to reuse again

Not only did I wash the balls, I used a toothpick to carefully scrape off the stuck-on gunk from the two rollers that touched that filthy ball.

I was a tech teacher when mouse balls were a thing. Kids used to steal them either to use as missiles at break time or just to mess up the lesson and piss off the teacher. We used to drill the retaining ring and fit small screws to discourage them. But if course this also discouraged anyone from cleaning them.

mouse cleaning is still a thing, though thankfully no ball-handling required.

These days, in homes with pets, I find that cat hair can get into the craziest places, and a bit of tweezer work is occasionally required around the LED/sensor lens under the mouse, and any assembly seams.

@patterfloof We had a tool to clean the insides - looked like a mini golf ball on a stick. Take out ball, spray with foam cleaner, wipe with cloth/paper towel. The stick this into the mouse body, and rotate it and move it around to remove all the "mouse jam"...

Whatever did we do before optical mice / trackballs?
I always prefer alcohol based wipes - no messing around drying off and you can guarantee they're clean; the trackball and the inner cradle.
Still a good idea to have mini blower & vac.

Also I am old enough to have had / used non GUI computers.

More than once I was called to fix a friendโ€™s or relationโ€™s computer and all that was needed was a mouse ball clean out. I was highly praised and revered. They still sing songs about my amazing feats!

I remember:
1. writing a guide for my secondary school IT class on how to navigate a computer without a mouse, when the mouse was stolen
2. digital mice finally arriving but only being able to use them on a very small number of surfaces that could reflect the light back properly

A decade ago I bought a super fancy gamer mouse, with the high speed sensor and the blinking glowy LEDs and the extra buttons, but I still have had to open it occasionally to clean out the dust from the optical sensor on the scroll wheel, and to spray contact cleaner in the switches.

Mouse maintenance doesn't end after castration.

in reply to Flock of Cats ๐Ÿˆ ๐Ÿˆ ๐Ÿˆ โ˜€๏ธ

I did once.

But it was the other sort of mouse.

Lots ok squeaking, scratching and biting; mouse p**s everywhere.

Do not recommend.

I made the mistake of reading the post without looking at the picture. I had a vision of a little tiny wash rag and a little tiny shower nozzle and someone holding a little mouse up by its tail.
