One of the neighbours smoke detectors was going off for an extended period of time. Just as I was about to go investigate, it stopped.

I assume this either means it was a false alarm after all, or the smoke detector itself has been destroyed in the blaze. 🙃

My cat has three distinct modes of operation:
1. asleep
2. being cute
3. VIOLENCE
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

I think that the three states are 1) sleeping 2) surveiling and 3) violence. Being cute is endemic to all states.

So, I've been getting reasonably decent with #OpenSCAD. I've debated opening an Etsy store, but I don't own a #3DPrinter. While I do have access to a couple for personal projects, I have nothing that would be suitable for commercial use, nor do I have the seed money to buy one.

One of the services I'm thinking of offering in the interim is creating custom STL files for people based on a rough sketch or photo, but I don't know if that would be a viable thing.

Is that a thing anyone here would have interest in?

I wonder if that's something worth discussing with the kwarztLab folks on their Tuesday drop in night? Afaik most have 3D printers, and I expect a few might have done the same?

unsolicited advice, I guess?

@patagona Ooh. I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the tip!

Pretty sure Rogers keeps disconnecting my internet in the middle of the night without notice to do some kind of maintenance hoping that nobody will notice.

I keep having to reboot the modem every morning for the past few days. This time I was awake when it went down.

There's a storm raging outside. I wonder if we're going to lose power again.

Katy and I have randomly discovered sumo wrestling and weirdly gotten into it. The first thing I learned was that the people who deliberately get seating in the front rows are... brave.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

It's all these dignitaries and rich people, those rows aren't easy to buy, and they get run over a lot. As do the judges, "Shimpan bowling" we call it.

Went to a large grocery store and waitied in the parking lot with a book for a few hours hoping to pick up an Instacart order. Didn't get one, but as I tried to start the car to go home, I found that I'd left the lights on and the battery's dead.

Waiting on my father to show up with jumper cables, but at least I'm not so upset about not getting an order. Would've sucked to find the battery dead when I tried to deliver it...

So there's this Japanese sushi chef YouTuber that Katy and I have been watching. He does all kinds of recipes, but he keeps using this one ingredient I'm unfamiliar with. He calls it "salad oil". Is that a mistranslation of vegetable oil, or is this something else I'm just unaware of?

Kevin Davy reshared this.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

It's any unnamed vegetable oil that you would use to make a salad dressing; the key characteristic is that it doesn't have much flavor. It's often sold as a mix of whatever's reasonably cheap: soybean, canola, peanut, and in some cases, cottonseed.

You can substitute whatever you like, especially if you think the recipe would improve with avocado or olive oil.

"Physical books are so much better than ebooks because you don't have to worry about the battery dying", I say as the battery to my reading light starts dying...

Candles! I appreciate the irony but at least you still have options.

Brought home a box of groceries. On my in the front door, the bottom of the box gave out and everything hit the floor. Amazingly, every single egg survived the fall.

I will concede that ebooks are convenient, but when it comes to a good novel, nothing tops the experience of an actual paper book for me.

Bank machines have business hours now? How is that a thing?

Are the machines that are replacing us demanding better working conditions now? 🙃

I seem to have allowed myself to run out of CR2032s. Ah well, If I don't test my blood glucose that means it's fine, right?
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

Katy: Did you look in the cabinet under your night stand?
Me: Yes. They're absolutely not there.
Katy: Found some.
Me: Where were they?
Katy: In the cabinet under your night stand.

venting (profanity)

@Kevin Davy I'm pretty sure they're shot. I've been neglecting it for a while (equal parts lack of funds and lack of spoons).

Already working on a contingency plan. If need be, we can lean on family for help. I just hate doing that because I know things are tight for them too.

ph (nothing to be worried about)

@Shae Erisson It's a thing my doctor's been keeping an eye on for a while now. My heart rate will occasionally just spike for no apparent reason. I'm told it's "an electrical issue, not a plumbing issue" which is apparently far less serious.

At present, it's nothing more than a nuisance. I'm wearing the monitor for now to see of they can actually catch it happening to better diagnose, but in general, it doesn't affect my day-to-day.

I've encountered an interesting bug in the @Nextcloud 📱☁️💻 client found in the F-Droid store. Whenever I use it to create a folder, the folder name is converted to lower case for some reason. I can fix this after the fact by renaming, but it's annoying (and kind of weird).

You probably don't need to be able to read #teeline to tell which item on my to-do list was cleaning (and re-inking) my #FountainPens.

There's also a lesson in there somewhere about how metadata can leak sensitive information. (note: teeline is not cryptographically secure 🙃)

Any time I create an account where the password policy forbids a certain class of character I know I might as well just hand my PII over to the data brokers directly.

Well, I've finally reached the point where I have to stop putting off getting new glasses.

Picked out new frames that are rather different from anything I've worn historically, and I can't believe how stupidly much I love them.

Sadly, it's going to take a couple weeks before they're ready, so I have to keep wearing my boring old glasses for a while.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

I am at the ‘I really need to go have them checked’ stage of previous glasses, and have been for months 🤷‍♂️

NetHack spoiler
Wait, minetown is on an unlit level? That's a thing that can happen?

Me playing #NetHack: Why am I doing so poorly with this bow and arrow?

Turns out I'm not holding the bow and am just throwing the arrows.

I guess that explains it. 🙃

So, I learned that GrapheneOS doesn't support Samsung devices. That's unfortunate. Is there a decent alternative OS that I can put on my aging Samsung tablet? Support for the S Pen would be a must.
in reply to R.L. Dane 🍵

@R.L. Dane 🍵 I'll have a look. I'm told that Samsung doesn't play well with third-party OSes though. 😕
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

Yeah, unlocking the bootloader may be challenging.

It's why I've always avoided their hardware. The hardware itself is lovely, but their OS is kinda meh, and they're usually locked down.
Motorola/Lenovo, too.

Oh gods, I've started playing #NetHack again. So much for today's productivity.

As a side note, it still annoys me that I can kill something (non-undead) and its corpse can immediately be rotten when I eat it. How exactly does that happen?

Almost just fell for a spearphishing attack. These things can be scarily convincing if you're not paying attention. It was an email purporting to be from my VPS provider saying there was a problem with my payment information.

Apart from the fact that the email address it was sent from and the site it linked to were random domains obviously not associated with my provider, the fact that when I looked at the source of the message, the image of their logo was <img src="https://en.wikipedia.org/..."> was a bit of a tip off as well.

I got one "from" a service provider.

It said I had to log in to confirm something.

My password manager didn't fill in ID and password. I was just about to do it manually when my Spidey sense wondered why.

The login address was 1 character off. Another good reason to use a pw manager.

I'm so mad at myself right now.

I went to a routine blood work appointment. I do this every three months, so I should know the drill. I forgot the appointment card. No problem. I booked it online, so they'll have it on file. Problem is, When I reached for my wallet to get my health card, it wasn't there. They need one or the other. I had to reschedule the appointment.

Worst part? When I got home, I found my wallet in my messenger bag. I had it the whole time. 🤬

I laid down "for a quick nap" this afternoon. Just woke up. It's almost midnight.

I guess the sleep deprevation of the past week has finally caught up with me.

Our cat has had this little stuffed burrito toy since the day we picked him up from the shelter. He's never given a damn about it. Now suddenly it's his favorite toy. 🤷‍♂️

My favourite #ADHD quirk: forgetting what I was saying as I'm in the middle of saying it.

Just heard a kid address his group of friends he was physically seated with as "chat". Is this a thing?

Maybe I'm just old.

in reply to Darcy Casselman

The question for me is whether referring to people IRL is still irony, or has it simply become part of the lexicon.

Who's the maniac that decided that radishes were edible? I think we're going to have to agree to disagree.

Been playing around with the riticulum network. It's interesting but sideband kills the shit out of my phone's battery.
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

In case anyone here is also using Reticulum, I can be reached at: lxmf@32f62870f2d7c418b59f1c5f9f1617e2

Don't know yet if it's something I'll use long-term, but it is at least interesting to play with for now.

For reasons I shan't get into, Katy had to adjust her diet for 24 hours, and I decided to do likewise so as to not make the experience any more unpleasant for her than it had to be. After reading the label, I have come to the conclusion that Ensure meal replacement shakes are not designed with diabetics in mind. They have about 75% of the sugar content of a can of Coke.

Oops...

At the hospital again for nearly two hours. Still waiting to see the one after-hours doctor they have on staff...

It's going to be a long night. I can already tell.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

Ohh. I was more thinking about the quality&total experience. But my bad!

neti pot discussion (gross)
While my neti pot is really good at clearing my sinuses, it has an unfortunate side-effect. I'll end up with a small amount of water trapped in my sinuses which will randomly drain at some unpredictable point when I happen to tilt my head at just the right (or wrong?) angle.

I've been playing around with #OpenWeatherMap's air quality API. Interestingly, there seems to be some disagreement between its report and Environment Canada's. The former says "Good" and the latter says "Moderate Risk". Granted, they use different scales, but that still seems a rather significant discrepancy.
