Doing captions for my next video right now.
I don't think folks realize how much time goes into doing good captions.
Transcribing one's own video and then assembling the captions and making them look acceptable on the screen is... work. Lots of work.
For me it's at least an extra hour for each video, and that's *with* a script. Unscripted videos are considerably longer.

in reply to Veronica Explains • • •though even just using your own tooling with a rough edit pass (I use MacWhisper) is already infinitely better than no captions (relying on Google!).
Any incremental improvement beyond adds more value. Whisper's gotten quite good now.

in reply to Jeff Geerling • • •@geerlingguy I am still dealing with hallucinations on Whisper's side, but on the whole it's gotten better and I've used it successfully (although with proofreading).
I actually tried it again just today, and it added a few extra sentences in Italian on the end of my video. I have no idea why since I'm only using the English model!
Even still, it's getting better for this case.

in reply to Veronica Explains • • •I’ve done Spanish subtitles for a number of videos in the past (personal projects, etc.) and ho-LY is the labor more than you’d expect. The real demon is in figuring out how to chop up long sentences so you don’t have dangling words at the end of lines that leave caption-readers grammatically confused. And yeah, for unscripted videos, stammers, filler words, and the like put me through the wringer.
But all said, it’s always a proud moment when I watch the whole thing through!
