Farooq unfollowed me for this.
Did I say something wrong?
I don't think so.
Why is it considered rude to debate these issues.
Belief is an intellectual action. It should be within the bounds of intellectual debate without emotional reaction.
Being able to understand an argument, without feeling pressured to accept it, is the very foundation of civilization.

Quoting scripture in this case is like saying that "Christian refuse to wear poly-blends" and then quoting that bit of Leviticus that no one has followed for centuries.
I think the problem in general is that many personal self-identification labels have gotten completely disconnected from how the group was originally group self-identified.

I believe I answered it directly in the first sentence, and later provided context.
Isn't "up until very very recent times almost all Sunni and Shia scholars agreed that the punishment for apostasy was death." just a direct answer to the question?

in reply to Deniz Opal • •@Deniz Opal My knowledge of Islam is very limited, so I can't weigh in on your specific argument, but I do have some experience with high demand religions in general. In my theist days, having someone point out inconsistencies in my belief system would make me... uncomfortable.
It's also worth noting that not every post made on social media is an invitation for debate. If you treat them as such, you can probably expect this to happen from time to time.
