I look at it as who were your parents, and if you had kids in your 20s, when was your first child born. Adjust by decades if in your 30s or later for the first.
My parents were born in the 1930s and were children during WW2 and for five years after. My only child was born in 1989. That is the definition of Gen X. Not the year I was born.
But really, no stereotype is a good thing, even stereotypes based on birth year.
