Lemon trees -- or at least the one in my living room -- also have 3 cm long needle sharp spikes all over. They're mean trees.

I expect that's because your lemon is still a sapling. Other fruit trees that grow needle sharp spikes while they're saplings are apples, pears and apricots.

What's strange to me is that "citron" is the French word for lemon. I have no idea what "citron" is in this context.

Most fruits and vegetables have co-evolved through selective breeding for hundreds and thousands of years.
