My question was, who in the SoftBank hierarchy thought this metaphor needed an extremely literal multi-slide explanation. That kind of derangement usually comes from the top, from someone who has decided the world does not fully comprehend their genius
Like I wouldn't give a shit but some of those trillions of dollars are gonna be coming out of the pockets of people who would otherwise be giving it to me to play a silly online game
You see this shit, this shit is what happens when people don't touch coins. If these people picked up a JAMMA cab cash bucket full of a grand's worth of quarters and gave it a shake and slished their fingers around in the coins they'd feel much better and their brains wouldn't be doing so much of this because their fingers would know that money was real. I'm not just saying that because I'm in the coin-op industry, I'm 100% serious
I mean who're you gonna trust more, the bloke in the pub whose jeans keep falling down 'cause his pockets are too heavy with coins, or whoever came up with (internal mechanism)
There's scientific study on the matter that shows swiping a card does not register anything, where paying cash does. People spend less freely when they have to pay with cash.
@bluestarultor I was sick once and watching daytime TV and it was one of those debt porn shows where they get someone in to sort out some family's finances and the lady was all "Regular viewers know this already" as she took the couple's cards and told them right, cash only from now on, 'cause these cards don't give you any sense at all of what you're spending.
They weren't even credit cards! They were debit cards, money-straight-from-the-bank-account cards! And they still fuck your head up!
🦝 The market can remain irrational longer than you can re- 🪿 *kicks down door* Oh YEAH? I'll fucking show YOU irrational, I'll fucking SHOW you INSOLVENT,
@lyncia small handful fuck that, you're gonna have a small handful on the top 'cause that's where your change goes, and then in the bucket you're gonna have a Nice Big Hoard built up over years and that will be Incredibly Satisfying and also useful if you need some cash in a hurry
a door in my forehead opens and a tiny little reply guy pops out who goes “hmmmm you claim to hate internal mechanism and yet coin-ops are full of them, maybe softbank is right about goose”
This actually made me realise that kids probably don't receive physical pocket money anymore. I wonder how kids nowadays internalise the value of things. Like, there's something tangible about having a 5 euro note, spending it, and no longer having that note. With card (or phone, depending), it's "number goes down". Mmh...
@Chronocide Absolutely children definitely 100% need to receive actual physical money and keep it in a box and look after it, I know some parents who fuck around with spreadsheets????? rather than Just Give Child Money????????? and they are doing it wrong
I'm old enough to have had some sort of container into which I dump loose change for a significant part of my life and yeah. Using cash in general changes your perception of money. It's suddenly not just a number. (Though 99% of my payments these days are cashless)
this is so true. I make a point to always use cash. I withdraw enough money to have 100€ at the start of the week. I rarely spend this much but at the end of the week I can feel how much money I spent, with my real fingers!
looks that way. Specifically the dollars that could have gone to wages, climate change prevention and disaster mitigation, healthcare, and overall prosperity
@catgoat Back in the day I went to a PowerPoint Karaoke event where you get up on stage and have to give a presentation based on whatever surprise slide deck they give you. This looks like a longer version of one of those decks.
I’m having fun picturing Softbank’s CFO, their comms lead, and their Head of Legal down at the pub, trying to drown their despair as Masayoshi Son presents his slide deck
You know what I love the best about all these companies' AI promise?
That they all talk about a future where money doesn't matter, because all labor would be done by robots, and humans can take early retirement after kindergarten. Focus on art and entertainment. To provide that future, all they need to do, is all the money. And then value, so much value that money won't worth anything.
Dear Soft Bank, you can own a quadrillion JPY in 16 years or even sooner. What you need is hyperinflation, not planet burning machines. But if you are envisioning a future where you wiped out your own population, you do you.
This mentality is the product of "number go up" addiction. Why can't people just play idle game on their phones to see number go up, and be happy. but have to burn the planet to feed their greed?
Conspiracy theory: this is completely intentional, the entire point is to get people talking about softbank because the stock market is bullshit and they think that deliberately spreading ridiculous slides will help their stock price _because_ people are stupid
(Disclaimer: I only _wish_ I believed this.)

this really epitomizes the way our economy focuses so hard on "the person who gets rich in a gold rush aren't the prospectors, it's the person selling shovels" that it just turns into a circle of guys trying to be the bulk retail supplier of shovels and just ignoring the fact there's no gold except the stuff they buy and plant in the ground in order to sell shovels
Oh. my. God. I’ve been scrolling through goose commentary for a day, kinda wondering? That’s nuts. In the process of making the case for AI, they managed to make an even stronger case against it.

The economic justification for credit cards was, *from day one*, that it psychs people into spending more money sooner.
