So many of the absolute worst accounts I suspend should *never* have gotten past signup ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

If your username contains a slur, hate-speech, or a well-known troll or dogwhistle reference, then it is a failure of your moderators and administration if that account ever sees the light of day.

If someone walks into your instance doing a Nazi salute and you don't slam the door in their face *hard* then you've let your community down.

I'm looking at you big open-registration instances.

@Lana what if there is only a single Nazi that everyone considers the court jester with his funny views on 'human races'?
Anyways please distinguish between trolling and Nazis. Good trolling can be quite entertaining whereas reading Nazi stuff is the equivalent of analyzing dogshit on the street ;)
in reply to __h4

@__h4 @Lana Historically court jesters were needed for levity AND telling the uncomfortable truths to the crown. If you think a Nazi can be court jester, you have a problem

  1. The person should be told to stop saying nazi shit and acting like a nazi if they want to stay. You canโ€™t denazify someone if you tolerate the nazi stuff
  2. If other people laugh at the nazi stuff, then I have a bad newsโ€ฆ either theyโ€™re nazis or permeable to nazi stuff

Talking about โ€žtrollingโ€œ, as if jokes and humor werenโ€™t a mode of communication and propaganda frequently used by nazis to make their ideas acceptableโ€ฆ

in reply to silly butch

@melunaka @__h4 @Lana exactly this...

Its what that abhorent streamer shit kid does (wont name him)

Say the most abhorent shit, and then go "i'm kidding"

Like its some get out of consequences free card.

in reply to Irrlicht

@irrlicht @Lana @melunaka thats a very good saying.

My partner always says "im joking" is not true...
Its a litmus test.

Shout something extreme like
"Star trek Generations is the best star trek movie ever made, the second best is star trek nemesis"

Look at people's reaction, and then "no, im joking"

Means you did the thing little kids do, see how far you can go until your parents tell you to stop.
And the more you do that the furter you can go...

in reply to Noortje Van Leeuwen

@Noortjevee @melunaka @__h4 @Lana
It's a tried and true bullying response to say, "I'm just kidding. Can't you take a joke?"

Because it's never their problem in their mind. It's someone else's failure in some capacity. They lack empathy.

in reply to D. B. Stuck

@MyWoolyMastadon @melunaka @__h4 @Lana my partner (shes ny fiancรฉ but it feels still odd to call her that) is a therapist/councilor.

And she agrees with the assesment.

in reply to Noortje Van Leeuwen

@MyWoolyMastadon @melunaka @__h4 @Lana she says (i asked her before going to work)

(Slightly paraphrased)
"Its a blame shift, and very narcissistic, it keeps their selfimage as being a "good person" they lay the blame on their targets, they weren't being mean... their victims just can't take a joke.

in reply to D. B. Stuck

@MyWoolyMastadon @Noortjevee @melunaka @__h4 @Lana As an old friend of mine once said: "if you're joking, we both should be laughing. If you're the only one laughing, you're not joking, you're being a dick."

Can you tell me any more info about social.vivaldi.net moderation issues? (it's fine if not - please ignore us if it is better for you)

I keep hearing rumours that are just allegations of bad moderation without any detail.

And I have seen vivaldi actually ban a user I reported before for dog whistles.

in reply to ๐Ÿ…ฐ๐Ÿ…ป๐Ÿ…ธ๐Ÿ…ฒ๐Ÿ…ด (๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿฆ„)

It's even worse if their instance software already has the tools to catch this stuff

RE: pizza.enby.city/users/domo/staโ€ฆ

This is incredibly poor moderation, because you can set username rules to prevent this sort of person from even signing up, like, mastodon.social literally added the feature too. They have no excuse. For any other admins reading, they look like this in your moderation menu on the left, and then here's also what the rule editor looks like. You can even set the matching to "require approval" instead of outright blocking the username...

in reply to LiquidParasyte

@liquidparasyte @domo ah I didnโ€™t realise it came stock. Yeah there isnโ€™t any excuse then. They should implement this immediately.
Unknown parent

Did vivaldi not then ban those users themselves when reports were forwarded?

I could understand a few users getting through cracks - vivaldi social accounts are part of the account system for their older email/forum too - but not banning those users, or users intentionally signing up just to be hateful would be concerning.

Not sure where I'd move this account to.

Thank you for sharing a few more details with me.

It is sad damage cannot be avoided or prevented entirely.

in reply to ๐Ÿ…ฐ๐Ÿ…ป๐Ÿ…ธ๐Ÿ…ฒ๐Ÿ…ด (๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿฆ„)

I'm on vivaldi.net - don't block all of us!
Vivaldi's CEO Jon S. von Tetzchner ( social.vivaldi.net/@jon) often posts on Mastodon promoting Vivaldi.
Maybe message him with some examples and get him to moderate his instance.

I really need to get off this instance. But it seems so prohibitively complicated? *wails in fediverse-illiterate*

Addendum:
Thanks to all who replied to this with offers of help. I'll delve into the options as soon as I have a couple of hours to READ ALL THE THINGS and click the necessary buttons. For now, life = overwhelm for me, so moving instances has to be low on the priority list. But I very much appreciate all of you for taking the time to reach out! โ˜บ๏ธโœŒ๏ธ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ––

in reply to ๐Ÿ…ฐ๐Ÿ…ป๐Ÿ…ธ๐Ÿ…ฒ๐Ÿ…ด (๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿฆ„)

the problem is that there are like 5 moderators taking care of these huge places. if i could pay money to have more moderators (good and qualified ones) come in and help moderate all the stuff we get over here in flagship-land, i ABSOLUTELY would. @MastodonEngineering you should consider setting up something like this and/or diverting more funds from your managed hosting program towards moderation

@shironeko

I was going to comment about that, but from pizza.enby.city/users/domo/staโ€ฆ it would seem you can put the flagged user name choices under moderation so a human can check if it's an actual fash/troll or just an unfortunate Scunthorpe.

I wonder if it would be possible to set things up so that it won't let you make an account with any words in a blacklist, and if anyone on an instance uses said any such word, the moderators are notified with the context and everything so they can decide whether to ban.
in reply to ๐Ÿ…ฐ๐Ÿ…ป๐Ÿ…ธ๐Ÿ…ฒ๐Ÿ…ด (๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿฆ„)

See, that's the point where I'm super happy about sitting on my tiny (effectively single-user) instance.

I only ever see posts from people I follow or stuff those people interact with (boosts, replies) which means that 99% of the weirdos don't even reach my feed.

i was on mastodon.social before.

Followers of some asshat tried to Doxx me, he celebrated them doing so, marveled in it even.
Want me to send revealing pics to "proof" myself.

I reported it, nothing happend to him, but my account got hidden, and mods told me i had to stop harrasing the guy (which i wasnt) because he "was one of the good ones"

And when i migrated he celebrated "chasing me off" and called for his followers to "keep up the good work" they did with me...

in reply to ๐Ÿ…ฐ๐Ÿ…ป๐Ÿ…ธ๐Ÿ…ฒ๐Ÿ…ด (๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿฆ„)

this was the push I needed to leave @Vivaldi once and for all. I use their browser, email and sometimes their mastodon instance. No more. If they insist on letting Nazis in, then to hell with them. I will switch everything over to another browser, email service and just stick to my own instance. Might also #fediblock their instance.

I just read one of the moderatorโ€™s post on this and it makes sense to me. I agree there should be a way to prevent folks from signing up with bad names but it sounds like it was dealt with immediately and the Nazi was punched. mas.to/@markwyner/115489852379โ€ฆ

in reply to kazรฉ

idk fam yesterday i remote suspended a guy from mas.to that had a username of HeilHitler1488. the server software i use has a cool little thing that lets you prohibit words from the username. Perhaps a nazi signing up with a regular username would be a problem but like there's no excuse for slurs in usernames lol
in reply to ๐Ÿ…ฐ๐Ÿ…ป๐Ÿ…ธ๐Ÿ…ฒ๐Ÿ…ด (๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿฆ„)

True, but moderators are human. If the vast majority of Nazis get told to fuck off before they ever get a chance to open their account, but one or two occasionally slip through the net and then are promptly told to fuck off once the mistake has been realised, I'm not sure I can ask for much more than that.
Unknown parent

@sashin

I don't think the pattern-matching block helps. If you can't sign up with the name you want, you'll just permute it until you can. And moderated registration probably puts off more people who are casually interested in the Fediverse than people who are willing to devote effort to harassment.

Ideally, you want a kind of soft block, where people who trigger that kind of pattern match get an account and can post, but they don't show up in live feeds, their replies to other posts are hidden / flagged / referred to moderators / something, and they can't DM people. They can shout into the void for a bit and then be banned. Or just left to scream into the void in a mode where you're effectively blocked by everyone.

in reply to Laura

@codingcatgirl The upcoming version 4.5 will support filtering usernames, but it's not yet a feature available to most. The only tool available until then is closing registrations (i.e., approving each new account).

@Stinkie @assimilateborg @courtcan

If you follow the steps in the transfer guide at fedi.tips/transferring-your-maโ€ฆ all your followers and follows will automatically move over to your new account.

Your old posts would stay on the old server, they wouldn't disappear, but they would redirect people to your new account. Anyone seeing your old posts would know you had moved and know where to find you.

@courtcan @FediTips what will happen to the old posts? Will they remain or get deleted. I know that they won't be moved to the new account.
in reply to Assimilateborg

@assimilateborg @courtcan @FediTips I spent a few hours over a few weeks trying to figure out how to cleanly migrate to another server. I almost made my own, but I'd probably have too much difficulty with federating. And it looks like my old account would just exist. Idk what would happen with the followers that interact with me. I'd need to ask each one to re-follow I guess.

I don't think the joinmastodon guide for transfers is clear enough or comprehensive enough, it leaves out some important steps.

I've done my own transfer guide at fedi.tips/transferring-your-maโ€ฆ which has a lot of steps, but each step is hopefully easy to do ๐Ÿ™‚ It also means you can transfer everything possible in one set of steps.

Yep. I think that's what made me do the callout. That or a "demonrat" reference.

I just got casually hooked on it watching people bemoan their lost pets that they left outside when there are wild animals in my part of California that can find a pet to be a tasty snack. Sort of like that funny (that aren't really that funny) videos show.

This sounds like a growth-problem if you tell people to just sign up, any server is fine. And when the people has been on fedi for a while they realize their whole instance is blocked by everyone else. How am I as a going-to-be user supposed to know everyone hates the server I randomly chose and blocks it?
in reply to Matilda Love

Depends how huge the userbase is on that instance is. Instance like Mastodon.social is so big that if you try to defederate it, you will lose lot of followers as well as account you follow.

At least for me, I have accounts I follow that are from that instance and the instance I'm on just "limit" it as it just too big to really do anything about it. Otherwise, I can imagine it just defederating it if it wasn't as big

@codingcatgirl I agree. I do sympathize with people who aren't willing to create an account if it'll need to be reviewed first, though. I certainly wouldn't bother in a lot of cases. Maybe if the server's average review time was displayed alongside the warning, making the request for a new account would be more appealing.

* was not thought up by somebody on the core dev team

in reply to Charles โ˜ญ is a Green

wow they're just now implementing this very basic feature, better late than never I guess
in reply to very normal person

and apparently it's only applying to usernames, they can't just add global filters? like so much of the racist harassment on fedi could be dealt with by a simple regex script that auto mutes / reports users that type certain admin defined slurs, for example the n-word, this is basic moderation
in reply to very normal person

@mook
Well, I asked them to do it and they said no, so they're _not_ implementing this very basic feature.

Unless they changed their mind someplace else?
