in reply to Evan Prodromou

my response was intended as a humorous way of saying “none of the above”. Admittedly, I could have phrased it better.
in reply to Rocketman

@slothrop nbd. Sometimes people assume I've got an agenda I'm trying to promote by mentioning some topic. I like to find out what it is so I can clarify, and sometimes it helps me make clearer polls in the future.
in reply to Andrew Feeney

@andrewfeeney This is a bug in how we designed polls in ActivityPub. There's no way to answer "none of the above", unless I define an answer for it.
in reply to Capybara :neovim: :arch:

@sotneStatue @andrewfeeney Other ActivityPub platforms? I doubt that.

You can see on the Activity Vocabulary section on questions that only positive responses are counted:

w3.org/TR/activitystreams-voca…

The only way I can see to do this in AP is to add a "none of the above" choice. Maybe there are platforms that do that automatically?

in reply to Massimo

@mcm_63 yes, that's a browser all right. This poll is more like a yes/no on these particular browsers, rather than "what is the most trustworthy browser", which is hard to do as a multiple choice question.
in reply to Evan Prodromou

I wish I felt like I could still trust Firefox. )-:

Answered: which of these do I distrust the least.

in reply to Evan Prodromou

the poll question should be: which of these browsers do you distrust the least.

Because that's what using browsers comes down to these days.

in reply to Evan Prodromou

LibreWolf -> A custom version of Firefox, focused on privacy, security and freedom.
in reply to Evan Prodromou

Tough one, lacking a "none of the above". I voted Vivaldi as they're the least worst of the bunch IMO, but they do carry the taint of Chromium, and any browser maker these days gets a certain degree of suspicion.
in reply to Evan Prodromou

Well, I use Firefox, anyway. So I trust it some.

The ones I would truly trust would be more fringe, open source browsers, but I've used, e.g., Iceweasal, before, and compatibility issues do come up.

in reply to Evan Prodromou

why not Safari? I did choose Firefox, but would've chosen Safari if this was a choice.

in reply to Evan Prodromou

trust? It's a big ask. I trust they will do everything within their rights to make the browser moderately safe and pleasant experience. I trust they make sure they stay on top of security patches and roll out features that benefit them more than the user. Complete trust for me, no.
in reply to Evan Prodromou

I trust Firefox *today*, but I am extremely worried about Mozilla's trajectory. I fear they could make a series of decisions at any moment that would lose my trust forever, and that there will be zero usable browser engines made by organizations that I trust.

I would not trust any browser made using a browser engine that I don't trust. It's too bad about Vivaldi, which seems like a friendly company, but being proprietary *and* relying on Chromium/Blink is totally disqualifying.

in reply to Evan Prodromou

@nicdex I use Safari 90% of the time. I use Firefox the other times when I’m on my gaming PC. If Safari for Windows were still a thing, I’d be using it.

and now if you ask which one of these browsers do you know, probably Vivaldi would get the same 28%
in reply to Evan Prodromou

Thanks. I've been a longtime Firefox lover, but I've switched my daily drive to Vivaldi, originally because they have put time and resources into the Fediverse, but now because I like the software. Thanks to everyone who responded!
in reply to Evan Prodromou

I like Vivaldi and use it as a second browser. I still daily drive Firefox (despite the questionable moves of their parent) because of inertia and not wanting to concede that chromium won a monopoly on browser engines.
in reply to Evan Prodromou

Vivaldi and Opera aren't that bad imho, but i'd keep trying "cleaned derivatives" like Librewolf (from Firefox) and etc.
in reply to Evan Prodromou

I've been using Brave because it can open Tor and am playing with the Arc browser just because it looks different.
in reply to Evan Prodromou

If I do another poll with 4 more browsers, I think I'll do Safari, Brave, and Arc. Any others I should consider?
in reply to Evan Prodromou

Iceweasel is a name I hear a lot, for Firefox family representation?
in reply to Evan Prodromou

Lynx, the oldest continually-maintained browser.

I've just learned about Zen browser. Downloaded it but haven't installed it yet. I believe it's built on top of Firefox
in reply to Evan Prodromou

I think you need a "none of the above" option. I'm not sure I _trust_ any browser.
Either that or a "it's complicated" option 😁
in reply to Evan Prodromou

How about WaterFox, a fork of Mozilla?

waterfox.net

in reply to Evan Prodromou

I don't trust any, myself, though I admit to ignorance. Chrome became bad enough that I switched to Safari and Firefox depending on device. Some of the others might deserve trust. I don't trust the two I use, but they have some good features. In particular Apple is unkind to its competitors, and parts of that are very good (like the curate's soft-boiled egg).

(Systemic problems need systemic solutions.)

in reply to Evan Prodromou

Belatedly - now that I think of it - I would have wondered why Tor wasn't one of the four. If trust is the issue I would have thought that was the one.
I see a bit of chat in the thread, but less than I expected.

Also - if you're running a browser on an apple tablet or phone, you're just running Safari in a skin. In that case, it's going to be at least as bad as Safari ... Well, I got curious and went to see what Tor says about it-
support.torproject.org/tormobi…

(Worth consideration)

@Evan Prodromou I'm still not sure exactly what "woke" is supposed to mean (when used in a derogatory sense).
in reply to Evan Prodromou

@Evan Prodromou Yeah, I did.

I'm aware of the original meaning of the term. It's just how it's become twisted into a negative term that baffles me.
