This guy GETS IT. Playing the #Atari VCS wasn’t cheerful happy cartoon time; it was interacting with a barely-digital, barely-stable alien artifact playing back unfiltered garbled inhuman programming from some other time and place. It was not made to display hew-mon text and did not build orderly graphics out of tiles.

Of course it was just a toy, but it was also seriously gritty sci-fi. Not because what you saw on your TV looked like what these things would look like in reality, but because it was as if you were operating a tactical display on an ancient derelict alien starship.

One problem I see is that many mainstream video games aimed at kids are hyper addictive in the "Our crack team of neuroscientists have optimized this experience to maximize dopamine release which will maximize the volume of kids screams for their parents to pull out their wallets to buy more skins/loot crate/Roblox Robux or whatever it's called.

The nature of vido gaming has changed. I still own my #Atari 800XL from the 80s. You know why? Because I can walk up, plug in a cartridge, play for 5, 10, maybe 15 minutes, and walk away satisfied and with a modicum of stress relieved. And they have a finite ending. You play, you keep playing until you die, and then you STOP 😀

Me: I'm good at Adventure, I'll do mode 3 (random).

First game: Green dragon spawns in the yellow castle, no sword in sight. When I get out, after many Start resets, I get mugged by the black dragon.

OK, new game. Sword in castle, nice. Dragon down the hall… pushed into the wall, above the black castle… can't move, sword lost. Start.

5 min later, I find the bridge, and grail in the black castle! And 2 dragons. Grail is stuck in the maze.

Yeah, old-timey games are nice and relaxing.

This is what BBSing at 300 baud looks like.

In 1984, this was about as good as it got for me.

Tonight, I needed to hit a couple of Atari / ATASCII BBSs and all I had at hand was a C64. So..I used "AtariTerm", which does ATASCII, but tops out at 300 baud.

It's like riding a bike through a neighborhood you usually fly though at 40MPH. You see and notice things you would usually miss.

I am no stranger to 300 baud, but it's been a while.

GFA keyboard controls are nuts. Top bar shows shift-F-keys, then F-keys. ESC flips to the graphics window/command line.

You might say "well it was early times", but no, GEM programs have alt-XCV clipboard, shift-arrow select, etc. VERY like Lisa/Mac not at all legally dubious. Mark Williams C has a standard microemacs and sh, with vi or emacs modes. I could install SteVIe and have a very nice vi. No, this program is just *weird*.

And you shouldn't think this is a plain text editor with a compiler. It's a structured BASIC editor that only beeps and doesn't let you leave a line that's invalid. Then it reindents it and sets uppercase keywords.

If you don't know what you're doing in it, it's reset-your-ST time.

Kids Today™ whine that they can't figure out :wq in vi, they need to use GFA BASIC and understand that you read the fucking manual before operating a program.

And then because I was annoyed with modern coding, but I'm still too caffeinated, I got back to dinking around with the Atari ST. Hisoft BASIC crashes too often for my fun, so GFA 3.5 it is.

But PRINT goes thru the VT-52 emulator, so you can't draw control chars. Gotta hit the AES(?) routines, which draw weirdly.

Which is kinda QuickBasic-like, all the structured stuff you'd want, but still mostly ST BASIC-compatible. Editor's a little better than ST BASIC's, but not much? Uses blocks for moving text. No interactive mode at all, which is bogus. Crashes once in a while but it compiles to binary, and runs fast when it works. This could be a keeper.

Got up late, so didn't coffee, only wrote tiny bit of useful code, then dicked around with Atari ST emulator & mags. Finally updated to Hatari 2.5.0

Which solves some problems, but I still can't run some things. This is mostly an EmuTOS problem, I suspect real TOS would be fine, and then I could have desk accessories again.

But for just loading old games, or playing around with ST BASIC, it's fine.

Couldn't get Laser C to run, CFG file problems?

It started as a simple experiment: pit ChatGPT against the #Atari2600’s (from 1977) chess engine (via Stella emulator) and see what happens. I figured it would be a lighthearted stroll down retro memory lane.

ChatGPT got absolutely wrecked on the beginner level.

Despite being given a baseline board layout to identify pieces, ChatGPT confused rooks for bishops, missed pawn forks, and repeatedly lost track of where pieces were — first blaming the #Atari icons as too abstract to recognize, then faring no better even after switching to standard chess notation. It made enough blunders to get laughed out of a 3rd grade chess club.
