I know #Android sucks in a lot of ways, but I'm tempted to get a #BOOX device as my next laptop, using Termux as my CLI.

Just get a 10" eink tablet and pair it with a BT keyboard or something. Because I don't see too many e-ink laptops out there, except for incredibly expensive ones.

Using #eInk for a laptop would be a fun exploration in minimalism, particularly if monochrome.

I suppose the Pinenote would be about the same price but comes with full-on Linux?

That was the first thing I looked at, but from the description, it's very much a device meant for embedded devs right now, and not really even a hobbyist product yet (and might never be).
in reply to R.L. Dane 🍡

I'd say that's not really true any more. These days it's a pretty normal Gnome experience.
in reply to khm

Hmm, Gnome is not what comes to mind when I think of a UI for eInk devices.

I'm firmly of the opnion that e-ink is just another display and doesn't need a radical design shift to use. They have some minor tweaks to the gnome shell but for the most part it works fine. the onscreen keyboard isn't great, but I just pair a bluetooth thing to it when I need to type.

Wow, that's so clean!! Kinda tempted!!

Do you have any control over the refresh mode? Can you, for example, set the display to dithered monochrome so that it does not require any full-screen refreshes? (basically the fastest refresh mode on the BOOX devices)

in reply to R.L. Dane 🍡

yeah that 'G:4' thing in the top bar is a dropdown menu where you can select different modes.

it's probably not as swanky as the BOOX thing but at least there's no years-long willful GPL violation

I have a lot of pine64 products (they're cheap) and they all mostly suck (they're cheap) but the pine note is the one I'd keep if I had to choose

in reply to khm

That's a resounding endorsement in the ears of this nerd! 🀣

Ugh, forget ever buying their devices, ever. πŸ™

#Onyx #BOOX

in reply to R.L. Dane 🍡

it's the primary reason I never have. the secondary reason is android.
in reply to R.L. Dane 🍡

Android devices are just starting to get a full Debian terminal built in. Currently limited to Pixels.
in reply to tripplehelix

I've seen that, but I'm not clear on what the advantage is over Termux. Termux has a pretty nice almost fully-featured Linux environment.
in reply to R.L. Dane 🍡

probably greater package selection, integration in the system... hopefully a little more access to the file system.
in reply to R.L. Dane 🍡

@R.L. Dane 🍡 I do a surprising amount of computing via Android devices. I just use Termux to SSH into a real computer.
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

What is it that you can't get from the termux environment? Is it just a matter of storage or CPU power?
in reply to R.L. Dane 🍡

@R.L. Dane 🍡 All of the above. I used to use a laptop, but these days its battery doesn't hold out so well, so I just leave it plugged in on my desk and connect remotely from whatever device is close at hand.

Edit: As an added bonus, my tablet/phone is a lot lighter.
