These Waymo and robo taxis are terribly expensive. The vehicle is $100,000+, you need a big lot for charging and cleaning, all these programmers for the software and billion dollar data centers.
Why don't we give a person a $20,000 used car and a radio, have a person with a phone in your city. You call the phone person, request a ride, they radio the driver to pick you up and give you a ride to your destination.
Much cheaper and lots of local jobs.

This is my job right now but I'm working with an agency so I can't really diss the agency's previous guys to the client, which is probably why I'm posting about my frustrations here.
My current view is that Claude is an incredibly powerful tool for generating cruft.

- much cheaper chinese models have been on their tails, as there are no fundamental advantage in their technology, competition erode profit, and give cloud services providers all the cuts.
- feds are likely going to raise interest rate due to high inflation, money would be harder to come by, even for them.
The tech lords are lying about their motive. The S curve on AI adoption is at 50% and they will only get another double from here.
So the LLM arms race needs to cool off a lot.
This is about survival and putting a fig leaf on it. But it won't stop the inevitable popping of the bubble. Too much supply, too little real demand. Sam loses money on every free user, and he has the most freeloaders because that is what he wanted.
We have to pause so LLMs don't get yo mama.
Slow down?! Let's put the pedal to the metal and destroy ourselves with gusto and pizazz.

I've been informed that this has been an oft-requested feature that nobody has currently found the time to work on. Considering I've never really worked on a large #Python project before, I'm happy with the progress I'm making so far.

I run u3acommunities.org (notably giving talks for the computing group which I run) and also the fediverse site u3a.social. All not-for-profit.
Oddly, I suppose, whilst I give talks on how generative AI works, I've long since concluded that I just don't want to use it ... ie the cons far outweight the pros.
But this stance does leave me with an issue ... I can't draw to save my life but yet my slides do need some decent graphics from time-to-time.
Any advice / ideas how to bridge this gap ?

Fair enough. But jargon is a standard feature of English. Many words and phrases have specific meanings in particular contexts. If the context is ignore, then a lot of language use will seem much more imprecise than it actually is.
Eg 'industrial' is commonly used as shorthand for 'powered by or derived from fossil fuels' in environmentalist discourse. Assuming a more general definition, prunes meaning from the discourse.

A group of people who are familiar with each other can use jargon terms in context, and add clarification when they know some participants are new to their specialist usage. When the potential reader is 'anyone', context collapse is inevitable.

@lobingera I don't really agree; so much of what I see is people bending over backwards working around whatever patterns some corporate middle manager thinks is good for engagement.
There's a lot of invisible effort that goes into making corporate social media do anything even remotely useful as an outreach tool.
Hard agree, having done stuff in a research group doing routine insta posts. It's a grind, with few tangible results and the ever present risk of being stuck at a nazi bar. An institution hosted blog would have been /would be far better - for both comms reach and building a useful institutional record.

Yes! I used to work at a public library. There was a server crash or something and the central 'local history' site that area library's used to make their photos etc. available crashed. So the director set up ours on a Facebook site. I had a fit. Why should our patrons, whose taxes pay for library access, be forced to sign up for a proven predatory platform in order to take advantage of that access?!!!??!!!!! That's the antithesis of what a public library is! (Fortunately the director who replaced him agreed with me and changed this.)

As a part of my due diligence as "owner of a nightclub" one of the questions I often ask is, "what are other venues up to these days?" In order to answer that question, I wanted to assemble a calendar listing with all of the events happening at my town's other venues with capacities of our size or smaller.
Surely they all provide ICS or RSS feeds. Surely.
Ho ho ho, I had to write 2k+ lines of code, with custom scrapers for 112 web sites.
I used to live in a place where the municipality had a big fat link to an .ics file on their website with all the bins pickup dates. One click, got it in my calendar software.

Ottawa has an app called "Collection" where you can check what kind of trash is supposed to go in what kind of bin, and get a schedule tailored to your home address that will notify you when it's time to put your bins out or when your pickup will be affected by a holiday. It's great, albeit, an app when I'd prefer less of those in my life.
But ... in the last 6 months or so (probably around when the recycling pickup was outsourced and some people's schedule changed) people were upset about missing pickups in my neighbourhood facebook group, so now someone posts a screenshot of what the next day's pickup will be in the facebook group each week, which by nature of facebook, appears in my feed some time in the several days following when the pickup has already happened....

@geekysteven Oh yeah. Most modern tech has hardware specs that my younger stuff couldn't have fathomed. It's just that the locked down software it runs is utter trash (and in most cases, actively harmful).
Still, there are some promising technologies out there, and also things that can be hacked to actually respect their end users. You just have to wade carefully through the minefield that is the modern tech landscape.
It turns out you can cram so many simultaneous high volume data transfers over sshfs before the host just kind of falls over.
To be fair, I knew what I was doing was janky and should have known better.

Unfortunatrly, it doesn't seem to work properly, and I can't prove it, but I think it's MitM-ing the messages.
Finally found another Android client that's working on an iOS port. I popped over to the project's GitHub page and what's the first thing I see? A .claude directory.

I believe such claims are inappropriate because it makes a serious allegation without providing any supporting evidence.
Claims of this nature should be backed by reliable sources and proofs. Without such evidence, perhaps it is better to avoid presenting speculation as fact.

One of the things I really love about #reticulum is its ability to seamlessly route traffic over literally any communication medium that can handle at least 5 bits per second. I'm also reminded of a YouTube video I watched a while ago where a guy was able to send data (at a very slow rate) over a literal tin can phone. Sadly, I can't find the link.

It's very frustrating and discouraging when so many people think that their little tiny thing -- signing an online petition, wearing a certain color hat, sharing a meme -- is going to turn the world around. Especially when so many of these people fail to do the big things: vote, call their Senators and Congress people, attend Townhall meetings. It's the bragging about Slactivism that I'm against.
I think some of this disparagement activity is ratfucking sponsored by the Bad Guys.
It's kind of like the 1960s adage that the guy in your radical group who tells you you need to stop messing around with useless protests and get violent is the undercover cop.

Patience.
For a lot of people, this is their first foray into non-compliance. They are going to start with small things within their comfort zone. This isn't a failure to do bigger things, this is training for it.
Self compassion.
If you are finding yourself angry at how little others are doing, you may be burned out. Rest is resistance too, as is pivoting to joy or humour in how you protest.

I would say it is more about the how able you are to inhibit thoughts from becoming actions.
Sometimes that means losing focus on a task.
Sometimes that means blurting out something you didn't mean to.
Sometimes it means fidgeting.
Sometimes it means the world is gone to you while you stay narrowed in on a really demanding task for hours... or consistently for days, weeks, years.
learning about hyperfocus was the thing that made me consider getting tested for ADHD.
I don't have trouble focusing, I just can't control where my focus goes, and I have zero sensory filters, so my attention goes all over the place when I get too many different stimuli.
It certainly doesn't help that all my senses are unusually sensitive.
I absolutely agree. I wish I had more control over my hyperfocus, because when it kicks in, I stop thinking and just start doing.
There might be a few neurotypical people who did awesome things, but honestly? Having ADHD helps so much doing these things... If only we had more control over it!
I have ADHD, diagnosed around 1995, and medicated at the time. I have a genius level IQ and can hyperfocus. Taking care of daily life? Not so good. 😂
My family always said that a bomb could go off and I wouldn’t notice if I had my ‘nose in a book’. Same thing with my life in Electronics and Coding. Now I write novels.
Apparently I ‘fake’ respond to conversations, but have no clue what anyone said, or that I did so. Fortunately, my better half understands that now and when she wants my opinion knows to interrupt whatever I’m doing and make sure I am focused on her instead of the task at hand.

She probably wasn't wrong.
Also, the fake responses thing was a real problem all throughout my schooling. I could even repeat back verbatim what had been said without actually absorbing it. That frustrated (and confused) even me.

my tabletop party did this to a sphinx once. they played the sphinx like a goddamn fiddle.
they get to a sphinx and just stare at it. the sphinx gets fed up and asks "what'd you come here for? just to stare at me?"
they say "we came here to enter, we did not come here just to stare at you"
the sphinx goes "alright, i was getting worried. now, answer my riddles three and the door shall open to-"
they say "but we already answered them"
the sphinx then commits the fatal mistake of asking "when?"
the party cheerfully answers "now"

Woke up this morning to a very large unexpected bill that needed to be addressed immediately. Managed to put the immediate fire out (or at least reduce it to a manageable simmer) but it took several hours of negotiating and it burnt essentially all of my spoons for the day. I should have just written the rest of the day off and done nothing else.
Katy and I decided to go run an errand anyway because we could turn it into a nice relaxing bike ride, which honestly sounded pretty appealing. Unfortunately, the errand went sideways and resulted in me having to spend another hour on the phone putting out another urgent fire.
I've done what needed to be done, but I know I'm going to pay a heavy price for overtaxing my system like that. The spoon tax is real.

Even with that, I would recommend checking the FDA Drug Shortage[1] list about a month before each refill. I've seen various ADHD meds listed there, though not yet the ones prescribed to me.
