GHCup: Because #Haskell apparently needs a package manager for its various package management systems.

I'm an idiot.

I was trying to install #Haskell on a machine and thought the installer was taking a really long time. In my defense, the last line of text was:

Installation may take a while.

It sat at this stage for over an hour while I did other stuff, because I hadn't bothered to read the previous line:
Press ENTER to proceed or ctrl-c to abort.
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

It's not you, it's bad design. The prompt should always be the final line of output.

I find that hlint is a great tool for pointing out where your code can be improved, but sometimes its suggestions are... interesting. Case in point, it just recommended changing
map (\(a, b) -> {- ...stuff... -}) $ zip as bs

to
zipWith (curry (\(a, b) -> {- ...stuff... -})) as bs

instead of
zipWith (\a b -> {- ...stuff... -}) as bs

*sitting at my desk*

Why is there no music in my headset?

Oh.

*restarts the aNONradio stream that I stopped when I stepped out for a moment, and goes back to doing other stuff*

*~60 seconds pass*

Wait, there's still no music.

*Selects the correct audio output device.*

Isn't ADHD fun?

Has anyone else been having troubles getting updates from @The Tor Project's #Debian repository? The signing key seems to be expired.

in reply to Leigh Honeywell

there is a lot of crappy and lazy journalism about this, a lot of outlets reported it as Microsofts fault and some said it was a cyber attack.
in reply to irelephant

@irelephant it probably wasn’t a cyberattack. My post was a joke though, riffing on a famous Arthur C Clark quote - perhaps you missed the reference? "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

No one is getting fired over this, right?

Correct. HR systems are down too.

Income inequality is an abstract concept sometimes hard to visualize, except when a Downtown Brooklyn thrift store needs to employ 3 full-time security guards, one at the main door and two at the drop-off door.

@A Sweet Gentleman Today was quiet on the sidewalk in front of the thrift store, probably because of the heat, but usually there are several unlicensed merchants selling second-hand wares out of a sheet right in front of the thrift store.

@A Sweet Gentleman It's close, but Goodwill is way more corporate than the private Parisian flea markets, which makes the contrast with the sidewalk peddlers even more marked.

I wonder how many times I'm going to have to re-learn how to use lenses in #Haskell.

Mormonism, mention of suicide

Mormon apologists: Maybe the reason the teen suicide rate in Utah is so high is because of the altitude.

Me: That feels like bad planning on God's part when he told Brigham Young to settle there, doesn't it?

I can't wrap my brain around how it can have rained all day long and still feel so hot.

Doubt it, unless by "Gun Control" you mean confiscating firearms from Republicans.

Got an oscilloscope as a late birthday present. One of the features listed on the box is "firmware updates".

Why on earth would an oscilloscope need firmware updates? It's an oscilloscope.

Next up: learn how to use an oscilloscope. 🙃

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

I would worry an "update" might be an anti-root patch to prevent owners from adding features and higher sampling rates found in much more expensive models

@Spacegoat From what I overheard it sounds like it was a drug bust. They hauled the driver away and eventually towed the car after a bunch of them turned it inside out.

@Krafting Can confirm. Just did the same. I didn't compare it word for word, but mine seems to have omitted the part about not ever repeating the prompt. The rest looked pretty much exactly the same.

It should come as no surprise to anyone who's been paying attention that I've grown disillusioned with capitalism over the past several years. What's interesting to me though is that any time I express this publicly, there are no shortage of capitalists who falsely assert that I am claiming that communism is the ultimate solution to everything. This is a false dichotomy.

I am not saying I have the answers to the world's problems. I just have eyes to see that the emperor has no clothes.

Edit: typo

Hey #Unix folks recommend me your favorite games that can run in the terminal that aren't:

1) the most basic boring arcade stuff like snake or missile command

2) roguelikes/dungeon crawlers (love em but there's no lack of those)

3) chess, backgammon, etc., more meaty board games sure but there's already a million easy to find ways to play chess in a terminal

edit: 4) IF, I know where to find plenty of that, forgot this one

This is for my machine with no gui so when I say terminal I mean terminal not just like "text based and looks like it'd be in a terminal maybe".

[PRINT_MODE:TEXT] in data/init/init.txt

in reply to via unreachable

@via unreachable The one in the Debian repositories can't. It looks like ASCII (actually CP437) but they're weirdly graphical tiles.
in reply to via unreachable

@via unreachable I didn't have an init folder under data. I added it and got the following when I launched it, I got the following error:

Display not found and PRINT_MODE not set to TEXT, aborting.
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

@me it looks like Debian moved stuff around; try editing /usr/share/games/dwarf-fortress/gamedata/data/init/init.txt

Change [PRINT_MODE:2D] to [PRINT_MODE:TEXT], and you should get curses output.
