TIL:
data Foo = Bar { val :: Int } | Baz { val :: Int }

is valid #Haskell. I wouldn't have thought you could define val twice like that.

It NEVER fails

Mastodon is the ONLY space where I receive racist comments to my posts

Mastodon, for me, is often indistinguishable from today’s Twitter

And now that Bluesky is fully operational, you can’t use “oh, that’s just the Fedverse” because I posted there at the same time and it’s NOT the same experience at all

Fix this shit or this “thought experiment” will not survive the shifts that’s happening

I looked at your instance and it appears to have a very bare bones moderation policy and no suspension list to speak of (unless it’s private). I don’t know if this is the main reason these things are happening but it’s probably part of it (there are quite a few nazi instances that are routinely evading blocks and it requires active administration to keep under control)
in reply to ⸸ commander ░ nova ⸸ :~$

@cmdr_nova I saw this explained in another thread. They're not coming from "racist instances". People just keep signing up for new accounts on big instances to evade suspension, so its a game of whackamole/death of a thousand cuts.

@Eniko Fox When people fail to use content filters, I just set all their posts to auto-collapse (essentially CW-ing everything they post).

I don't know if Mastodon supports this and it's still somewhat of a game of whack-a-mole, but it's the best solution I've found thus far.

I have a messenger bag that I typically carry around with me. Sometimes things go in there and I forget about them.

Katy was looking for something and discovered that for some reason I had put our marriage certificate in there. The last time I needed the physical certificate was years ago, so it must've been sitting in there and I've just been carrying it around with me unknowingly for quite some time.

I imagine I should probably find a better place for it.

I should probably also go through it to see what else I've put in there and forgotten about.

Me: I like math because its answers are unambiguous and not up for debate. Two plus two is always four.

Finite fields: Oh really?

In what may be the first time in the history of the world that anyone has done this, I just managed to use super glue without getting any on my fingers.

meta: on CWs

I've stated before that I'm not the CW police and I'm not going to dictate how others should use them, but if you're looking for a general guideline on when you might consider using them, this seems a reasonable guide:

Time to trot out this old thing:

GHCup: Because #Haskell apparently needs a package manager for its various package management systems.

I'm an idiot.

I was trying to install #Haskell on a machine and thought the installer was taking a really long time. In my defense, the last line of text was:

Installation may take a while.

It sat at this stage for over an hour while I did other stuff, because I hadn't bothered to read the previous line:
Press ENTER to proceed or ctrl-c to abort.
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

It's not you, it's bad design. The prompt should always be the final line of output.

I find that hlint is a great tool for pointing out where your code can be improved, but sometimes its suggestions are... interesting. Case in point, it just recommended changing
map (\(a, b) -> {- ...stuff... -}) $ zip as bs

to
zipWith (curry (\(a, b) -> {- ...stuff... -})) as bs

instead of
zipWith (\a b -> {- ...stuff... -}) as bs

Why is there no music in my headset?

Oh.

*restarts the aNONradio stream that I stopped when I stepped out for a moment, and goes back to doing other stuff*

*~60 seconds pass*

Wait, there's still no music.

*Selects the correct audio output device.*

Isn't ADHD fun?

there is a lot of crappy and lazy journalism about this, a lot of outlets reported it as Microsofts fault and some said it was a cyber attack.
in reply to irelephant

@irelephant it probably wasn’t a cyberattack. My post was a joke though, riffing on a famous Arthur C Clark quote - perhaps you missed the reference? "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

Income inequality is an abstract concept sometimes hard to visualize, except when a Downtown Brooklyn thrift store needs to employ 3 full-time security guards, one at the main door and two at the drop-off door.

@A Sweet Gentleman Today was quiet on the sidewalk in front of the thrift store, probably because of the heat, but usually there are several unlicensed merchants selling second-hand wares out of a sheet right in front of the thrift store.

Hypolite Petovan
@A Sweet Gentleman It's close, but Goodwill is way more corporate than the private Parisian flea markets, which makes the contrast with the sidewalk peddlers even more marked.

Mormonism, mention of suicide

Mormon apologists: Maybe the reason the teen suicide rate in Utah is so high is because of the altitude.

Me: That feels like bad planning on God's part when he told Brigham Young to settle there, doesn't it?

Got an oscilloscope as a late birthday present. One of the features listed on the box is "firmware updates".

Why on earth would an oscilloscope need firmware updates? It's an oscilloscope.

Next up: learn how to use an oscilloscope. 🙃

I sell products ready-assembled, and do-it-yourself kits for building the same products. Some of my customers buy the kits because they really like building kits, and that's great.

But others buy the kits because they think they're entitled to the finished product at a lower price, and they begrudge every second of effort they must put into building the kit. Those people really exist and they are the market for tools that purport to save "the value of your time."

in reply to Matthew Skala

@Matthew Skala Yeah, that's valid. If you're doing it to save money - that's fine.

But this is a criticism of the *argument*, not the sale. People can and should sell preassembled things, kits, and more! Not everyone wants to build! But if someone is building on purpose, don't tell them to value their time.

STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING!!!

A trailer for the Sierra On-Line documentary has just dropped!

It features both Ken and Roberta Williams – the founders of the most important PC gaming company ever. Certainly, it was the most influential American gaming company after Atari.

Roberta Williams was a huge influence on me and millions of children who primarily gamed on PCs. She brought us King’s Quest, Laura Bow, Phantasmagoria, and a host of beautiful PC gaming classics. To me, she was as good of a game designer as Shigeru Miyamoto.

I wish Sierra still existed. I miss the magic that they created.
