Feed Curation Help
!Friendica Support
I'm trying to help my partner curate a feed. Given that I'm easily the most active user on this node much of the global feed is, well... nerd stuff. I've subscribed her to some kbin groups that are in line with some of her interests, but it seems that everything I so much as like appears in her feed as well, cluttering it quite a bit.
I have her followed content scope set to: "Conversations my follows started or commented on (default)" so I don't see why this is happening. I could set it to "only conversations my follows started", but I worry that would prevent her to see things posted to the groups she's subscribed to.

@Tobias Also, should it be set to "true"

? I set it to the latter as the line you linked had an unquoted boolean value. My knowledge of PHP is somewhat lacking, so perhaps they're equivalent?
Also, sorry for being such a pest about this...

is correct. Can you check whatbin/console config system like_no_comment

PeerTube, the Fediverse's alternative to YouTube, is normally associated with video. However, you can also upload audio files directly to PeerTube. It will accept lots of audio formats including .mp3, .ogg, .aac, .flac, .wma etc.
You can optionally upload an image file as a thumbnail. If not, audio files will show a black screen by default.
You can find out more about PeerTube at https://fedi.tips/peertube-video-hosting-on-the-fediverse/

Yep. I discovered this on my own installation. Very useful for streaming access.
I think it transcodes it into a video, though. Haven't really tried to see if there's a way to download the original audio file.
I just tried it on my own instance, it does download as audio in the original audio format.
Maybe the transcoding is just for internal purposes and it uses the original file for downloads.
It will be transcoded for streaming, so you can upload a FLAC file but the streaming format won't be FLAC.

PeerTube has been in existence since 2017, it's backed by @Framasoft who are one of the biggest supporters of FOSS and the Fediverse.
The idea is to create a place to host video (or audio) where people aren't spied on or exploited by algorithms.
Server costs are higher for video, but it's called PeerTube because it uses peer-to-peer technology so that when people watch a video they also send bits of the video to each other. This significantly reduces the amount of bandwidth the video host needs, which makes it better suited to indie servers with lower budgets.
I don't think it's aiming to be like Telegram or any messaging service. It's mainly meant as an alternative to YouTube.
But, yeah, you're right about limitless not being possible! It's kind of difficult to compete with giant corporations on unlimited storage space.
Think for the moment PeerTube is aiming for small independent niches rather than a limitless service. For example https://video.blender.org or https://greatview.video. The niches can federate together though, so you can browse and search many niches on one server.
PeerTube is a video hosting platform, for watching pre-recorded videos. Try looking at https://tilvids.com for example. (It also has streaming but the main focus is on pre-recorded stuff.)
OwnCast is a video streaming and chat platform, like Twitch. Try watching https://live.retrostrange.com/ for example.
Invidious is a way of watching YouTube without Google seeing your personal info.

Network Feed Not Loading
!Friendica Support
As the title suggests, I've been having trouble getting my home feed to load lately. It keeps timing out. It's been an intermittent issue, but seems to be getting worse. Everything else works, and other accounts on the same server seem to be less affected.
I've recently set my database to prune remote content that is more than 30 days old hoping that that would help, but if anything it's gotten worse. I'm wondering if the pruning itself is contributing to the problem. I imagine it's a rather computationally expensive process; how often is it done?
Though, the problem could be something else entirely. Any thoughts?

@Michael Vogel Will do. I've disabled the pruning for now and that seems to have helped, but with the intermittent nature of the problem it's hard to be certain. I've also noticed that there's a setting to periodically optimize tables that was disabled. I've enabled it and in a week or so I'll try to re-enable the pruning.
If the problem persists, I'll have a closer look to see what other optimizations I can make.

Folks in the wildfire smoke, I’m so sorry.
My only notes as a West Coast asthmatic are: Test all your masks bc some will filter smoke better than others. Wash your clothes after being outdoors. Take extra showers if you can, especially before bed—and use something with a surfactant in your hair, bc co-wash doesn’t do a great job with smoke particles. Put your air filters in the bedroom at night. Offer extra masks to people who work outdoors.
Good luck. 💙💙💙

Oh oh and get a CO2 monitor! It’s very easy to build up way too much CO2 in sealed indoor spaces and then you will feel like absolute shit even if the air is filtered clean.
Rigging up a filtered fresh-air intake is the only good way around this, you can do it with filters and a window and a bunch of painter’s tape in a pinch.

For them, easy pleasure and even pleasure at the expense of others is morally acceptable, even desirable. They need to prevent those they control from having access to pleasure and relief from trauma symptoms as a means of control. And they are in positions to influence culture. “Don’t use technology because it uses energy” is not a useful line of thinking.
Instead, the thinking should be “How do we make technology more energy efficient and sustainable?”
Take cars. What if you could drive one that was powered by human activity instead of gas or batteries?
We have something more energy efficient and sustainable: a velomobile.
It requires neither gasoline nor batteries. It’s fast, can carry cargo, as well as multiple humans. What’s more, they’re safer than bikes and protect you from the elements.
Most people should probably ride a velomobile instead of an automobile for their daily commute.
So why isn’t that happening?
Infrastructure. It’s hard enough convincing city halls to build bike lanes. It’s near impossible to convince them to use a technology hardly anyone has heard about before.
And yet, as a society, it’s probably better to tell people “You should build infrastructure for velomobiles” instead of “You shouldn’t drive a car.”
I, for one, want a future where cars are human-powered.

Jonathan Lamothe reshared this.
This is the silliest take and amounts to “We shouldn’t eat food because food requires energy.”
But of course human-powered transport is more energy efficient than burning fossil fuels or mining for rare earth minerals. This is so self-evident and obvious, that this isn’t even up for debate.
If you want silly, this is what I thought of when given the question "What if you could drive one that was powered by human activity instead of gas or batteries?"
That’s actually not true.
Humans are better endurance runners than any other animal. When accounting for long distances, we’re actually faster than horses.
Humans are better endurance runners than any other animal
Other species might be better at speed or distance, but no species can run faster, further under all conditions than humans can. And yes, that’s you tooCatherine de Lange (New Scientist)
I once had a coworker who was an avid bicyclist and rode his bike about an hour to work every day. He burned so many calories riding that much that he was pretty much always hungry and consumed a huge amount of food, and basically always ate all the company-provided free food he could find. There's no such thing as free energy. If people are going to use muscle power to drive, some of them will eat more food to get that energy (the rest will just get in better shape). I'm asking how growing, transporting, and cooking all that additional food will compare to, say, energy use and carbon footprint with solar powered electric cars. Humans are only about 25% efficient at converting chemical energy into mechanical motion, and electric motors are roughly 75% (says the internet). But we're talking about a complicated system with lots of feedback loops, so I couldn't guess at the winner, but I don't think it's obvious. That's why I'd like to see an analysis.
Fairly often, I see suggestions for collecting "surplus" power from sidewalks or roadways. But if you build a sidewalk or road that can absorb mechanical energy from a passing foot or tire, it TAKES that energy from the person or car by slowing it down a tiny bit. The person walking will have a slightly harder time walking, and the car will take a bit more energy to propel. And the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics says you'll always lose energy to inefficiency when you do that. So I'm default skeptical of ideas that aren't explicit about the ultimate source and cost of the "free" energy they rely on.
Eating food is better for the environment than burning fossil fuels and mining rare earth elements.
This is a fact that’s not up for debate.
I’m not entertaining this discussion further.
Does everything obvious require a debate?
It’s not even arguable that riding a bike is better for your health, better for cities, and better for the planet than driving a car.
I’m not going to entertain any discussion otherwise, and I don’t care if you’re “only asking questions”.
Reply guys get blocked.
I tend to think that the future of cars should be as a specialist thing for people who have accessibility or geographic restrictions etc. They just aren't sustainable at the current level. We also need to actually fix public transport accessibility as possible.
One idea I had once for urban areas where it is very difficult to fix things everywhere (e.g. London) was a 'blue badge taxi'. It would be a specialist taxi service with the fare subsidised to the level of the equivalent journey on public transport.
