I'm sure everyone here has "the tech box": that box where you shove the miscelaneous cables and dongles and other crap that isn't currently being used but is too useful to just get rid of. In my case it had spilled over into multiple boxes and had just become a bit of a nightmare.
Anyhow, my parents were getting rid of this guy, so we took it home with us. Katy and I just spent the past hour meticulously going over every single item in our various tech boxes and cataloging them into a system inspired by the one described in @Cory Doctorow's book, Makers.* It's not quite so elaborate as in the book. It's just an org-mode document that tells me exactly which drawer each item is in—no fancy RFID tags, but they're not items with a lot of churn either, so it's fine. Got to admit, it was rather satisfying to my probably #AuDHD brain.
Anyhow, I present to you the new gay tech organizer.
* That system has lived rent free in my head since I read the book like a decade an a half ago.
Edit: I make one little edit to fix a typo (okay two typos) and then need like three more edits to fix the formatting errors those introduced. I'm fired.

I used to have joke nametags with „Professional Scapegoat“ and „Master Sergeant Shooter Person“ on it but that one won’t be.

I had to stop using interpreted languages in elementary school because they were so inefficient, asm was the way back then; when I finally encountered C in college? It felt bloated. I do not think anyone using LLMs and vibing their way around, would have such insights; since I get the impression most of those lessons were lost on folks after CPUs transcended the 10MHz barrier, decades ago and kept getting faster and cheaper and nerds such as I were some of the only ones left who cared?

Sounds like a reasonable point on the enshittification path.

in reply to zrb • • •@zrb I think this is what happens when for the last 20 years or so it became common to tell students to get into this profession for the money. (Which makes sense - it's more money than most degrees.)
So we now have a large population of coders who really (more or less) _don't_ care that much. Getting a bigger paycheck was their primary motivation in the first place.

The internet weirdos who still enjoy coding, on the other hand, mostly seem like lovely people.

in reply to datarama • • •@theorangetheme @wrl @ladytel That's not to say I'm doing fine at all. I'm terrified of the future and I'm awfully, awfully depressed.
Just not lonely. The company of ghouls is worse than no company at all.

At any rate: I've sort of come to terms with the fact that my job is going to go away, and that I will probably find myself below the relative poverty line - again. I've survived that before, though. If the AI ghouls don't manage to completely break down society, then I think I'll live.
However, I want to make weird computer art and as long as there are programmable computers that's what I'll do. Even if it turns out to be for an audience of 7 people.

Im just gonna go before I depress you further, because my vision of the future doesn’t see that as possibility, because the ruling class sees our very autonomy as a threat.
They will not rest until we are all accounted for. I only hope im dead by then.
If im lucky i will die peacefully in my sleep one night.

I even moved far away from home specifically to study at a university that had developed a new program 3 years earlier. A bunch of the faculty had worked at nuclear plants, developed formal methods of verifiably correct software for safety critical systems.
It's been over 20 years. I wonder if that's still a thing now. Part of me still hopes so.
