Dear OpenBoard,

I have you set to English (UK) for a reason (because English (CA) isn't an option). Quit trying to autocorrect "colour" to "color".

Thanks.

that's odd having to go with en-us because there is no en-gb option is the norm but then ob seems to have started in ch..

Just got to the section on Smart Pointers. As I recall, this is where things start to get particularly interesting/complicated.
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

You don't often need smart pointers if you get the design of your code right. Similarly, there's not much need to use copy or clone if you work "with the grain" of the borrow checker. Adapting your designs and coding style in this way is, IMO, the key part of learning Rust.
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

for me the hard part to stop making mistakes around was the difference between &str and String, but the hard part to actually understand is pinning. Smart pointers are pretty straightforward.

Diving into the #Veilid documentation... or what I can find of it.

I have an idea that may well turn out to be vapourware, but my brain won't let me drop it if I don't at least try to build it.

I've been itching to do something with Veilid since @The Gibson first announced it.

screwlisp reshared this.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

I honestly didn't think veilid managed to get anywhere, which was sad.
VeilidChat exists but I think that's the only productive/useful project.
Development on the repos has really slowed down post-announcement, which isn't inherently a bad thing, if it's "done", but I don't think it's done - instead it feels stalled.

Maybe it all moved on-network and to places I can't see? That'd be cool.

Fun fact: If you comment on a #Lemmy or #kbin post from #Friendica, it lets you see specifically who up/down voted you.

I wonder if people on those platforms know that their votes are not as "anonymous" as they are on #Reddit.

Just pushed two pull requests to #Friendica. I love that #FOSS gives me that option rather than just begging the vendor to fix something.

I've been thinking about the whole xz debacle. It's demonstrated to us once again that just because a project is open source, doesn't necessarily mean that project is trustworthy. Despite this, my stance remains the same: If you can't trust me with your source code, why the hell should I trust you with my data?

Dear spammers:

If you're going to create fake accounts, maybe don't choose a profile photo with an iStock watermark...

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

They can put some effort into their profile pic 😜. Why they have to be this low effort 🙃 losers. But hey at least they are making it easier to be detected as a spam account 😂🤣.
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

I was comming across these kinds of very obvious spam accounts a cople of times to. Usually these accounts only message one or two other obvious spam accounts and in some rare occasion they replay to some toots to say some reactionary things. Most of time nobady bothers to react to them, because most of the intent is tranparent enough, it's just low effort trolling.

@Alex :autism: :neofox_flag_ace: Good to know. I don't like to use third-party lists, because I use defederation as a last resort, and want to make those calls on a case-by-case basis as I become aware of them. Fortunately, I'm a small enough server that that's been a sustainable policy so far.

I'll check out those other two, though I'm pretty sure I already have at least noagendatube.com blocked already. It sounds familiar.

There's this little Chinese restaurant that Katy and I like to order from occasionally. Because this is Canada, the fortune cookies tend to have English and French on them (one language on each side of the paper). They're manufactured in such a way that when I crack them open, I usually see the French side first, which usually isn't a problem.

I'll admit that my French is not as good as my English, but I'm more or less bilingual. This time though, I swear the French side of the fortune was generated by a Markov chain or something. I was actually forced to read the English side to figure out what they were trying to say.

The French side:

Vos yeux délicieux, voire dynamiques, ont fait naître un admirateur mystérieux.

The English side:

Your dynamic eyes have attracted a secret admirer.

Am I just forgetting how to speak French, or is this a really clumsily constructed sentence?

At some point (apparently last December) a new #Friendica version came out and I hadn't noticed. Finally got around to upgrading, and it seems to be running much more smoothly than the previous version.

Also, there's a "channels" feature now? Gonna have to look into what that is.

thoughts on capitalism

The reason I dislike pure free-market #capitalism is that it invariably leads to decisions being made by accountants that should instead be made by scientists and engineers. When this happens, people tend to die.

Since the capitalist typically doesn't suffer these consequences directly, the only factor that ends up mattering is what it does to their balance sheet.

Strong regulation can translate these human costs into financial ones. To those who argue against this approach, I submit that the only alternative solution to the problem is decidedly... less kind.

TIL that #LambdaMOO doesn't recognize && as having a higher operator precedence than ||. That led to a fun little bug.

What started as a seemingly simple request (adding sake to the menu at my #LambdaMOO sushi bar) has snowballed into me writing a whole drunkenness subsystem.
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

Still tweaking the parameters a little. The way it was, one glass of sake could get you pretty obnoxiously drunk for a good period of time. I toned it down a bit to something slightly more realistic.

Today while I was out, I saw a guy at a busy intersection holding a handwritten sign. Obviously, I assumed he was panhandling, because people frequently do that there.

As I approached, I saw that his sign only had a URL on it. Out of curiosity, I visited it. Turns out it was some bitcoin mining scam.

While this was definitely a novel marketing approach, I wonder how they figured this particular tactic would instill confidence in anyone...

Lambdas.

Just spent an embarrassingly long time trying to track down a bug in my #LambdaMOO code. Turns out it was the generic function I'd built for folding over a list of values. It was such a stupidly simple function, it hadn't even occurred to me that the problem could be there.

@screwlisp I'm currently in a debugging/refactoring phase (to optimize for quota usage). If I finish doing that and still haven't heard back, I'll probably create my own public-ish space that people can link into and connect it there.
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

If you'd like to help people build something on their own quotas, hopefully UNK is eventually going to register and I could really be doing something more interesting with my own quota.

@screwlisp Sure thing. Apparently someone has already started directing people to me with questions. Fortunately, I'm happy to help if I can.

ph, mention of blood, math/chemistry (possibly incorrect)

When you think about it, blood glucose meters need to be shockingly precise. Let's take a real-world example to illustrate this.

This morning, my glucose levels were 6.7mmol/L. What does that mean? Let me dust off my high school chemistry and bust out a calculator.

The internet tells me that glucose has a chemical composition of C6H12O6, which would give 1mmol of glucose a mass of about 180mg (0.18 grams).

A reading of 6.7mmol/L means that in a litre of blood, there would only be about 1.2 grams of glucose.

For perspective, a litre of water is 1000g. I don't off hand know the density of blood, but I imagine it's not too far off.

My meter was able to tell this from a drop of blood.

That's pretty wild. Can someone check my math on this?

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

ph, mention of blood, math/chemistry (possibly incorrect)
Your math is good but would you redo you calculations in ounces and gallons so us Americans can make sense of them? 😜
in reply to PerryM ✅

ph, mention of blood, math/chemistry (possibly incorrect)

@PerryM ✅ I don't understand Freedom Units, but I tried to put everything in the same unit (grams) to give an idea of the sense of scale. My main takeaway is that the glucose measurement makes up somewhere in the ballpark of 0.1% by mass. The fact that it's possible to get that precise a reading from a single drop of blood is downright bananas.

Edit: 0.1%, not 1%. 1% would probably be lethal.

Jon, I was "pulling your chain". Your math is perfect and your amazement logical.

Not questioning the accuracy is nearly the same as not questioning the building an ARK big enough to hold 2 of every animal on earth and feeding them and what comes next and even getting all of them on the Ark without DHL!

I'm working on building a sushi bar in #LambdaMOO. Katy and I had the following conversation regarding the waitress I'm currently programming:

Katy: I'm surprised you didn't make her a robot.
Me: I thought about it, but a lot of the other shops are basically run by vending machines. I wanted to give mine a more human touch... though, right now she crashes when anyone talks to her. Humans don't do that.
Katy: Well, some do.
Me: Okay, fair point.

In my experience, if banks are their gold standard of #infosec, I really don't want my medical data anywhere near this system. Just sayin'.

I would agree. Banks are not good at security in my own experience.

Created my first generic class (two of them, actually) in #LambdaMOO. They allow people to create portable rooms in-game. I'm using them to create a #DoctorWho parody.

So, it looks like #LamndaMOO requires me to have special permissions to program it, which I suppose makes sense, but is also a little disappointing. Still, there seem to be some general-purpose classes that I can extend without actually programming. Guess I'll see what I can do with those.
