So, for the last few days, #Emacs has been glitching out on me. When I'd try to do certain things, it'd complain about an undefined variable and then just refuse to do the thing I asked it to do. Today, it started doing this when I tried to list the manuals.

I deleted the cache files and restarted it. Everything's fine now. I'm glad it's fixed, but... really?

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

Do you use emacs.desktop files, eg with desktop-save? I've also had strange goings-ons where starting emacs gives errors and even C-x C-c doesn't work. Removing the .emacs.desktop file in use resolves it.
in reply to mocom

@mocom I think this is what broke it.

I think the problem started when I installed the org-mode package from M-x list-packages even though it was already installed via apt. I removed it again, but I think it broke things.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

org is a built in package :
org 9.5.5 built-in Outline-based notes management and organizer

So no reason to install it

Our garbage can broke. It's one of those ones with a foot pedal and a soft-close lid. They're normally over $100, so obviously I'd rather fix it than replace it, but the damn thing is deliberately designed not to be repairable.

I've identified the issue though. I'm going to try to design and 3D print a brace to reinforce the broken part. It won't be a pretty fix, but I think it'll work, and it'll be on the underside so nobody will ever see it.

I'll have to get some epoxy to fasten it, though. I hope it works and I don't make it worse.

@buoou Is your Gemini capsule down? I'm getting an error 53.

Maybe it suddenly doesn't like my VPN?

@uoou
in reply to uoou

@buoou There it is.

...wait, you've been awake since Thu 31 Aug 2023 23:45 BST? 🙃

@uoou
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

Yup, it's been a long day 😢

Honestly, I have a script that tells me when I should be tired. And it was pulling from that online data. And I was without internet for a while so I made it all offline and forgot to get back to uploading.

Was only really useful for people who can just ask me anyway 😁

TIL that #Emacs' built-in web browser is named eww.

That seems an appropriate name for a web browser, tbh.

One of my favourite marketing weasel words (weasel phrases?) is "clinically studied".

It really means nothing.

"This product has been clinically studied."

"Neat, what results did those studies yield?"

You know, it says something about the complexity of a program when its help system has a help system.

uoou reshared this.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

TBH, most of the moo programming I do is directly through tintin++. I'm considering switching to using emacs as a moo client, but I'd have to find a way to port over the rather heavy customizations I've made to tintin++. Things like managing the sushi bar are done via local scripts.

The org-mode stuff I'm doing right now is kind of separate from moo.

Why does #Debian's #Emacs package not include the documentation?

Turns out that's in the emacs-common-non-dsfg package... obviously.

JJDavis :terminal: reshared this.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

because emacs' manual is licensed under dsfg (EDIT: i meant gfdl, lol) which is not free in debian's perspective

Is there a way to tell org-mode's agenda view not to show completed to-dos and schedule entries that are more than say a week past completion?

I've been an #Emacs user for a long time because it's just what I got used to. I had no particular loyalty to it.

The more I dig into org-mode though, the more I see it as its killer feature though. This alone is enough to keep me from ever switching to another editor.

Please note: if you like another editor better, that's perfectly fine. Use what works for you. For the love of God, I'm not trying to spark an Emacs vs. vim flame war.

org-mode is too slow for me. I load it up like "I have to wait 20 seconds for a file to load? For this?" It's 2024 ffs
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

I keep not-quite fully embracing org-mode because I spend too much time outside of Emacs (e.g. on mobile devices). I probably just need to work out some scripting to dump into an inbox queue.

Plus work being absolutely inflexible about not letting work sync to anything else, though it helps enforce life boundaries. 😀

It's interesting how often the people who encourage you to "question everything" get upset when you question them.

Since we broke the pens out of storage, Katy's been taking up calligraphy. She's rather good at it too.

Anyhow, I cautioned her against using cheap paper with a #FountainPen because I've found it to be an unpleasant experience. Despite this, she's using a notepad from the dollar store. As it turns out, the paper is surprisingly good quality. No feathering or bleed through whatsoever.

Colour me impressed.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

I've used fountain pens on a variety of papers. Cheap American notebooks are usually not bad -- in fact my gripe with them is usually that the ruling is always too dark, the paper itself is okay.

generally, Vietnamese paper is pretty good for FPs. Vietnamese paper often shows up in cheap binder notebook paper or composition books, so I’m not surprised that it could show up in a dollar store notepad

So, while there is a #FountainPen community here in the fedi, is there a #teeline community?

Goodness, this has made me feel a tad nostalgic. I used pitman in my work, but a music journalist flatmate was taught teeline. I wonder if there’s much need for either these days…
in reply to Seven ✨🍂✨

@Seven ✨🍂✨ For me, it's part practical, part just because it's cool. I have ADHD and sometimes my brain runs faster than my hand can write. I tend to type notes, but I don't always have a keyboard handy.

I also like being able to write notes without having someone read over my shoulder... unless of course they happen to be a British journalist, which is unlikely in Canada.

I wonder how much hair pulling would be involved in switching to (and learning) Xmonad...

Is there a #YouTube frontend like #NewPipe that can be run on a #Debian system?

Both Piped and Invidious are pretty much dead now.

Well, it looks like FreeTube (as mentioned by a few people) seems to be doing the trick. Thanks for the input, everyone!

Despite having been an #Emacs user for years, I know I've only scratched its surface. I finally decided to start looking into org-mode (I blame @screwlisp for this) and, it's actually pretty damn cool.

Is there an easy way to collaboratively work with org-mode files (especially from mobile devices)?

Note: I said easy. It can't involve git.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

Not want you want since it involves syncing to a remote Git repository but I discovered ZettelNotes recently which supports Org files, much more feature rich than Orgzly-revived or Orgro.

Once setup to sync with Git repo it does so in the background.

Not tried collaborating yet though as only I write my org/org-roam notes.

ZettelNotes : znotes.thedoc.eu.org/
Orgzly-Revived : orgzly.com/
Orgro : orgro.org/

@slackline :emacs: :orgmode: If the frontend is simple enough maybe. The idea is to be able to share notes (like our shopping list) with my partner.

I already have a Gitea server set up, but if the frontend is simple enough to abstract all the git nonsense away, it might work. I've never seen that simple a frontend for git though.

Our current solution involves Markdown files on Nextcloud.

Giving qutebrowser another go as my default browser.

Now I just have to remember how in the hell to use it.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

Hit my first snag: Nextcloud whines at me that my browser is "unsupported". I clicked on "continue with unsupported browser" and it let me in though. Apart from not detecthing the system's dark theme, everything seems to work properly so far.

So I've got my dedicated #BaystateBlue #FountainPen back to about 90% working again. I'm now leaving it soaking in distilled water for a few days to hopefully get the flow through the feed completely back to normal. I usually use regular tap water, but since our water's so hard here, I figured it was worth using distilled instead, especially since we still had some laying around.

Sometimes I lie in bed putting off making breakfast because I have to test my glucose levels before I do. I fucking hate doing that. You'd think that in four years I'd have gotten used to it. You'd be wrong.

Just did some #teeline (shorthand) practice. Looking at what I'd written, you might think I'd suffered a stroke or something, but that's more or less what it's supposed to look like.

Now that I've broken out my #FountainPens again, I find myself wanting to take another crack at learning #teeline (shorthand).

So I've decided that I'll be giving my business to my local(ish) fountain pen store instead. It's a bit of a drive, but I prefer to support local businesses where I can.

Is there a large #FountainPens community on the fedi?

Anyhow, I have a dedicated blue #Lamy Sarafi that I used to use for my #BaystateBlue ink, because it's notorious for permanently staining everything it comes into contact with. A while ago, I accidentally let ink dry out in this pen, and I haven't been able to get the feed flowing properly since. I've cleaned the pen several times and left everything soaking in water for several hours on a few occasions. I've also tried changing the nib. Eventually, I just emptied it, cleaned it out, and left it sitting on a shelf for a while.

I recently pulled it out again, cleaned it once more, and inked it up. Same problem. I'm going to leave it sit inked for a bit to see if maybe capillary action will eventually set in, but if this doesn't resolve the issue is there anything else I can try? I can always replace the pen, but I'd rather not if it can be avoided.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

So someone elsewhere recommended soaking in a 10:1 water:vinegar solution. I've considered this, but don't know if it'll damage the feed. Thoughts?

Shannon Prickett reshared this.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

no, vinegar won’t damage the feed. But I’m not really sure it will help in this case. If you want something stronger than normal pen flush, try Rapido-eze. It’s designed for technical pens and can clean out some stubborn particles.
in reply to paradoxmo

@paradoxmo I've heard mixed responses about pen flush. Many have stated not to let a pen soak in it.

Shannon Prickett reshared this.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

if it’s standard ammonia-based pen flush, you should not keep the nib or the barrel submerged in it. You should fill the pen with it like you would with ink, and leave it there overnight. This is different than soaking.

Shannon Prickett reshared this.

in reply to paradoxmo

@paradoxmo Ohhhh! That's the part I wasn't understanding. I was just running it through the pen.
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

vinegar is pretty safe in general and you can always dilute it. I think the safari has a plastic feed, too.

if it were me I would use a little dishsoap and an old toothbrush first and try to get into the feed's nooks and crannies. if the suds turn blue, it's working

in reply to Nick

@Nick Oh, there's an idea. I might give that a go if I can find an old tooth brush.

So my sister is confident that she can fix the bag mentioned in this post. Dropping it off with her. In the meantime, I've had to distill its contents into the absolute essentials and transfer them into a smaller bag for the day.

It's weird, but it'll do for now.

I've known I have #ADHD since I was first diagnosed in high school, but sometimes I wonder if perhaps I might be somewhere on the #autism spectrum as well. Let me explain a thing that's going on right now to illustrate what I mean.

I have a canvas messenger bag. I've had it for years and love it. I keep my whole life organized in this bag. Everything has a place and I know exactly where everything is. Recently, one of the snaps that holds it closed gave out. Within a couple of days the second one went as well, so the bag just falls open, which is fine if I keep it upright, but is kind of a pain in the ass.

The place I got it from essentially has a lifetime guarantee. I'm sure I can trade it in for another "equivalent" bag, but I'm sure they won't have this exact one since it's been several years since I bought it. This causes me an enormous amount of anxiety, because the new bag will be different, and I won't just instinctively know where all its contents are (because the configuration of the internal pockets will likely be at least a little different). It's not just the act of replacing the bag, but knowing that it'll mess me up for weeks afterward too.

I feel like this dilemma could possibly be explained by ADHD alone, but I kind of wonder...

Does this resonate with anyone in the #ActuallyAutistic crowd? I am of course not looking for a formal diagnosis or anything. It's more of a curiosity.

screwlisp reshared this.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

Just got it back. Holy shit! You'd never know anything had ever been wrong with it. One of the snaps is a little stiff, but that's a problem that will solve itself in time.

I have the greatest sister ever!

I love living so close to a major Oktoberfest venue. For the past 10 minutes or so, someone's been screaming at someone else, over what specifically, I don't know. I can only make out bits and pieces.

My favourite was "you can't talk like that to me!" My friend, I don't know who said what to you, but I think you've waived your right to complain about that at this point.

another autism question

Another question in the "is it just #ADHD or is there some #ASD in there too" series:

I've recently learned that some people with autism have a tendency to repeat back phrases verbatim when people talk to them before answering.

I do not think this happens to me (at least not with words I hear) but I do have a tendency to do this with written text, stuff on billboards when we're driving, that sort of thing.

I have no idea why I do this. It's not like it's everything I see either. It's just sort of a compulsion that occasionally strikes for no apparent reason. Is that a thing that makes sense to anyone, or is it just me? I guess I just write it off as a weird thing my mind does when it wanders.

Looks like the network cable that connects the server to the router is starting to fail. Have a replacement, but running it will be nontrivial. I expect it to be completed by the end of the weekend though.

story time (long)

Just had the biggest scare of my life.

Some context is necessary. Katy works an evening shift, so we usually sleep in to 10-11AM. She also likes to sleep in absolute darkness, not a single photon in the room. To this end, we've taken drastic measures to ensure that we can have the bedroom very dark, even at noon.

This morning (and I use the term loosely) I woke up to notice that the outlet my phone charger and the nightstand lamp are plugged into was emitting a distinct orange glow. Nothing plugged into it is causing this; it's coming from the outlet itself.

I woke Katy up with an urgent sounding "ummmm". I thought we had a small electrical fire inside the outlet. I ran to the breaker box in the kitchen to throw the breaker for the outlet and grab a screwdriver so I can get into (and hopefully extinguish) the outlet.

Turned off the power and was reaching for the drawer with my screwdriver and Katy says "I think I know what it is."

Turns out, this outlet shares an electrical box with an outlet on the other side of the wall and the sun was shining on it. In the total darkness of the bedroom, the glow I was seeing was sunlight from the other side.

Anyhow, that's how the server abruptly lost power today.
