Dear Mastodon instance admins,
Palestinians are facing genocide and famine.
If there is a Palestinian account from Gaza on your instance and it is *not* exhibiting bot-like behaviour PLEASE AT LEAST CONTACT ME before limiting/suspending it so @joynewacc and I can attempt to verify them by having a video chat with them on Signal and adding them to Gaza Verified:
Blocking the accounts of Palestinians in Gaza on the fediverse is like repeatedly slamming the door in the face of Anne Frank.
Please have some humanity.
Also, if your server is a safe space for Palestinians from Gaza, please respond and let me know and I’ll add you to the list at gaza-verified.org/guide/

This is a good initiative. It's one of the difficult moderation issues: you want to keep your users safe from scammers, but you don't want to make a mistake and block an actual person.
Of course Palestinians are welcome on mastodon.world. (Or any other of our instances)
Dear @hachyderm, some Palestinian accounts like @mohshbair or @Dr_Nadeen98 are hidden from Hachyderm users to protect them from bots, but these accounts and probably some more aren't bots.
They're actual Palestians living in Gaza under genocide, and have been verified by multiple people who had video calls with them.
@aral and @joynewacc run a website gaza-verified.org that lists accounts you can definitely unhide from Hachyderm users. See the message above in the thread.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out to us; however, these accounts aren't independently limited. They're limited because right now there is a temporary limit on Mastodon Social while they combat a spam wave that has been on-and-off since mid July. We have posted about it here:
hachyderm.io/@hachyderm/115112…
And Mastodon Social has posted about it on and off, including here:
mastodon.social/@staff/1149222…
We've received a few questions about the Mastodon Social limit over the course of the weekish they've been Limited due to the latest wave. To reiterate: the instance-wide limit is temporary, and as the wave dies down to manageable levels, we'll lift it.
Thanks!

Hello everyone! Thank you for all of your reports, looks like there's another spam wave so we're going to temporarily limit a few places to help mitigate that a bit and also #HugOps to all of the mod teams out there there.Hachyderm.io
@davidculley @mohshbair @Dr_Nadeen98 Thank you; appreciate the explanation.
It’s all the more important that we discourage Palestinians in Gaza from creating accounts on mastodon.social.
I’ll add a note to gaza-verified.org
Is @hachyderm a safe space that we can recommend for them?

All accounts, including Palestinian accounts, that follow our code of conduct (Don’t be a dick - No hacking - No violence - No fascism - No colonialism - No white supremacy - No religious extremism - No nationalism - No racism - No homophobia - No transphobia - Safe space for LGBTQIA+ - Safe space for neurodivergent) are welcome here. Depending on how people intend to use their accounts, we do ask that people CW if they're going to post war imagery and similar.
🌈 Welcome!
Oh that’s good to know. We need someone to vet.
Truth is the more people accept these messages the more thd chance for fake accounts. With money being funneled AWAY from those who need it.
It’s a self-defeating prophecy situation and yes, an institution to vet, into an allowlist, helps to break the cycle.
I’ve updated the list of Mastodon instances whose admins have publicly announced that their servers are safe spaces for people from Gaza:
Arabic: gaza-verified.org/guide-arabic…
English: gaza-verified.org/guide/#serve…
If you’d like yours added to the list, please let me know by replying here.
Mastodon and the fediverse is the last lifeline for many people facing the unthinkable – genocide and famine – in Gaza.
Let’s do everything we can to make them welcome, seen, and loved here.

as a regular user, would it be better to contact you first/instead of reporting to admins when being directly contacted by such accounts?
I am fairly certain that they were bots just due to their behaviour outside of the messages they sent to me, but obviously didn't put all that much effort into verifying that before reporting
No such thing as late. I’m limiting it to Mastodon instances just to keep things simple for everyone at the moment but I’ve bookmarked this if we get to a point where we have the bandwidth to support Lemmy also 😀

I’m conflicted when reading the posts here about #USPoli that get past my filters. On the one hand, it’s beyond distressing to see a country where so many friends live descend into overt fascism. And to see so many posts about life just going on as if everything is fine. On the other hand, I know that I try to do post here that emphasize positive actions in the face of whatever the fuck is going on (because we're not immune in Canada), and I’m certain that many others do the same. And folks here are not necessarily posting about all the shit that they go through.
This is not, at all, a criticism of what *any* of the folks I follow post or repost. It’s general rant about whatever the fuck we’re living through, and my occasional feelings of… whatever… about it all.
Thank you for attending my existential crisis…

For those of you who may not know. It would appear as if the Guppe groups are down for good. Apparently the bloke who ran it got knifed in the back by the domain being sold to another ahead of schedule and before he could renew it. Whether he will be able to get it back up and running in another way, I don't know.
Fedigroups run a similar service, for those interested. I tagged the autistic one above. about.fedigroups.social/home
I'm not sure how widespread this information about the Guppe groups is yet. But, for those of you who us it a lot, whether for autism, or anything else, it may not be the worst idea to post something similar to this to your followers and help spread the word.

I keep wanting to resurrect my homemade 8-bit CPU project (heavily inspired by Ben Eater's breadbord computer). One of the changes I want to make is to have a variable speed clock module that you have to manually turn a crank to run. The faster you crank, the higher the clock speed.
Is this practical? Not in the slightest. It would be really cool though.
Dear grocery store I was just at:
If you want to play the game of making fake "security scan" announcements over your PA system, it might add to their credibility if they didn't sound like they were made by a professional voice actor in a recording studio.
Just sayin'.
So my partner and I do Instacart to help make ends meet. We have supposedly opted out of heavy orders,* and yet we were assigned an order with three cases (40 x 500mL) of water. That's 60kg (assuming negligible packaging weight).
This begs the question: what exactly is their threshold for what is considered a "heavy order"?
* because they don't pay anywhere near enough for us to destroy our bodies like that.

I agree in spirit, but man... Its only 50% rentseeking... My elderly parents and computer illiterate siblings and coworkers would get in trouble fast if they weren't constrained by 3 software platforms: mint software manager, android play, and MS whatchamacallit. I have pounded it into their heads: never download software candy from strangers. (I live in an anti-apple pocket of the world)
But then, i guess all three of those do let you do your own thing to varying degrees.
Even the term "Side loading", makes it sound non-standard and risky. Which of course, it doesnt have to be.
Once you’ve bought the hardware, it’s yours, not a lease where the vendor still dictates your choices. Calling it sideloading makes it sound like something shady, when it’s just freedom to install what you want.
Bold of you to assume that your phone is really "yours". I'm sure that by buying one Google owns your soul and that of your firstborn.
We need more competition in the Mobile OS market, and Google needs to be hit with a big enough antitrust suit to cripple them for a couple of decades.
the whole case of why I've always had an Android phone: I'm a dev, if I want something I can write and install it.
I almost never do of course, but it's completely fucked up for Google to expect me to register an account with their service to receive their blessed key material in order to install my stupid side project on my own device
but Eugen, developers will continue to be free to distribute their apps off of Google Play and sideloading remains unaffected!
(as long as the apps are signed by Google shhhhhhhh don't tell the regulators, the whole walled garden thing has been going so well for Apple)

on one side, how different is what Google is proposing from what Mozilla has been doing with side-loaded extensions, which they have to certificate even if you host them yourself?
on the other side, why did I see no one complaining about the Mozilla stance on this?
I'd argue there's a critical reason besides rent-seeking: security.
It's a genuine conflict between user rights and the need to protect the average person. Phones hold our banking apps, 2FA tokens, mics, cameras, and countless secrets.
When a sideloaded app steals data, the user doesn't say, "My sideloaded app failed." They say, "My Android/iPhone got hacked." The OS developer takes the blame.
Android's approach—allowing it, but behind a clear security warning—seems like a decent compromise in this difficult balancing act.
Amen! And then there's my cars infotainment center that I can't even sideload!
Edit: I'm sure there are some absurdly smart people here who could tear apart the dash board and hard wire into the computers pinout to do it. But that's a little beyond my capabilities.
I agree: if someone buys a "computer" or a general purpose device, your point certainly holds.
But on the other side of a fine line I imagine (perhaps older) game consoles: when the original Nintendo came out, that company was not expected to help you run Atari software on their hardware.
They'd not prevent it - if you could figure out it, good on you. But Nintendo shouldn't be expected to make that work.
Not-supporting versus actively-preventing is the key difference for me.
I did not know of this word. It sounds a bit like the word ”jaywalking” which was invented by car companies to shame pedestrians into getting out of the way.
As someone who developed operating systems for 50 years I know that there are reasonable cases; but, as none are relevant to Google’s latest behavior, I will not elaborate.
Since a mobile device is mostly a general purpose system you should be able to run any software that doesn’t violate laws and it’s not the OS vendor’s responsibility to enforce laws except those regulating the radios in the device.
I like the term “rent seeker”.
Like Jaywalker is the rent seeker for car companies.
It is known that sideloading is a real risk for most of Android users*
*The bad guy comes to your home, enable ADB debug, you let him connect your phone, you give him your pin, you let him few moment to load a naughty apk (bring coffees) and VOILÀ ! 🔥
BTW I had today to clean a fully stock up to date Android (you even can install bank app on) because of a "legit" Play Store bloatware setup'd lots of other adware apks 👍
This list of replies is a hilarious string of people pretending that they’ve never looked at someone’s Windows machine *so completely fucked up with malware and viruses that the owner just blithely clicked on and installed* that the only solution was to nuke it from space and *buy a whole new computer*
For a good fifteen years the number one reason for tossing perfectly good hardware and buying a newer Win PC was virus/malware infestation. Might still be, I have no idea.
at this point I just want a fucking slab that lets me call from Linux.
I want postmarketOS on an AMD Ryzen with only 64bits (dump the 32, make a bloody atom ryzen you cowards), and a pure-64 Steam build. I want a slab that lets me play anime games if I bloody want to. And deploy a Linux fleet management solution. AND JUST LET ME DO MY THING.

Sideloading as a word was coined in 1990
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidelo…
Please stop spreading lies to make people angry
Especially as this newest move of Google is redundant: play protect is already built in all Google play services using phones.
It already flashed and remains suspicious Appa and known malware from all sources.
So how exactly is locking down the signing keys for apps that are allowed to run at all and connecting them with government ID for developers helping security?
This purely an anticompetitive measure.
counter-point: run your software outside this rentseekers sandbox then. it’s absolutely a bad look for them if something happens to you while in their ecosystem (randsomware, malware, identity theft, etc.)
just because you own the physical memory registers doesn’t mean you’re ever making use of them without this rentseekers work and IP.
sideloading is a bullshit word made up to make doing what you want with what you own sound more scary. Let's call it what it has always been called on PC.

Hey Fedi, I could use some help with this one. I'm in over my head.
We have an #Insignia portable #WashingMachine (model: NS-TWM16WH9). The agitator has suddenly stopped, well, agitating. It makes a buzzing sound as though the motor is being engaged, but no motion. A quick internet search identified a slipped belt as a plausible culprit, but I found what appears to be the belt at the botton of the machine, and it seems perfectly fine, though I don't know if it's perhaps the one that spins the drum (which is working fine).
It doesn't throw an error code, or give any other indication that the computer is even aware there is a problem.
Any ideas what else the issue could be? At the moment, I have it sitting unplugged as I don't know if there's a big ass capacitor in there, storing a charge waiting to strike me down when I go prodding, and to be honest, I'm decidedly in over my head on this one. At least it soesn't seem to require security bits though.
I'm sure it's out of warranty and we can't afford to replace. Any suggestions would be welcome. Boosts appreciated.

It should come as no surprise to anyone who's been paying attention that I've grown disillusioned with capitalism over the past several years. What's interesting to me though is that any time I express this publicly, there are no shortage of capitalists who falsely assert that I am claiming that communism is the ultimate solution to everything. This is a false dichotomy.
I am not saying I have the answers to the world's problems. I just have eyes to see that the emperor has no clothes.

Great idea 👌
What does the DL380 G4 do?
Haven't seen this baby in awhile!

@mvilain I'd never heard of this, and DuckDuckGo isn't telling me much. What markets did the DECDataSystem target?
(I used 11/70s early in my career, though. RSTS/E and 2.x BSD.)
Just beautiful. Great reminder how pure and powerful Unix once was.
Thinking about it, my first serial-line terminal login on a SysV machine was back in January 1990, eons ago. It was a big tower case server with a 68020, and even then it was considered an older machine for legacy projects and unimportant enough to let newbs like me have a go at it. Your machine is about a generation or two older, and still running strong. Great job!
Hey #Unix folks recommend me your favorite games that can run in the terminal that aren't:
1) the most basic boring arcade stuff like snake or missile command
2) roguelikes/dungeon crawlers (love em but there's no lack of those)
3) chess, backgammon, etc., more meaty board games sure but there's already a million easy to find ways to play chess in a terminal
edit: 4) IF, I know where to find plenty of that, forgot this one
This is for my machine with no gui so when I say terminal I mean terminal not just like "text based and looks like it'd be in a terminal maybe".

Have you investigated interactive fiction? The game that has stuck with me as a good introduction to the medium was Photopia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photopia
There are likely many other on-ramps to text adventures, probably newer and better games, but I just thought that one had pretty colors 😉

So much fun can be had with a scripting language and a terminal emulator.ctrl-c.club
I believe old versions of Dwarf Fortress have an ncurses mode which runs in the terminal. Dont think its supported anymore on the steam/itch release though, sadly.
(I hope DF doesn't count as a roguelike or dungeon crawler 😀 )

bsdgames, but I wanted to specifically recommend hunt from there as a multiplayer shooter. Surprizingly fun for what it is. Only works in multiplayer though.

exceptionally cursed but: I once hacked a ncurses TUI display mode into a Gameboy emulator, using half-height unicode blocks to get 2 square-ish pixels per text character. worked badly, but worked nonetheless
unfortunately I don’t think I still have a copy I can share, but if you have the time and the know how it is both possible and very funny

Text-based games are often forgotten and neglected. However, there are many ASCII gems out there waiting to be explored which are immensely addictive and great fun to play.Steve Emms (LinuxLinks)

[PRINT_MODE:TEXT] in data/init/init.txt
@via unreachable I didn't have an init folder under data. I added it and got the following when I launched it, I got the following error:
Display not found and PRINT_MODE not set to TEXT, aborting.
@me it looks like Debian moved stuff around; try editing /usr/share/games/dwarf-fortress/gamedata/data/init/init.txt
Change [PRINT_MODE:2D] to [PRINT_MODE:TEXT], and you should get curses output.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe • • •In the future, I recommend meal prep; it reduces the jit cooking overhead by a lot, tho it can't eliminate it entirely for most dishes. Many of my meals are (quinoa + beans + nooch + 99 secs. in the microwave).
In the present, I recommend the a ready-to-eat snack that's pareto optimal for you measures of nutrition, distance, and cost. I find a small bag of cashews with as little added salt as possible works well for me. Others have suggested packaged "cheese" and crackers.

(My BP stubbornly remains high, tho.)
These days I continue it because the closest restartant (that isn't a food truck or also a convenience store) is a 15 minute drive away, I think.
