You know, it says something about the complexity of a program when its help system has a help system.

TBH, most of the moo programming I do is directly through tintin++. I'm considering switching to using emacs as a moo client, but I'd have to find a way to port over the rather heavy customizations I've made to tintin++. Things like managing the sushi bar are done via local scripts.

The org-mode stuff I'm doing right now is kind of separate from moo.

Why does #Debian's #Emacs package not include the documentation?

Turns out that's in the emacs-common-non-dsfg package... obviously.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

because emacs' manual is licensed under dsfg (EDIT: i meant gfdl, lol) which is not free in debian's perspective

Is there a way to tell org-mode's agenda view not to show completed to-dos and schedule entries that are more than say a week past completion?

I've been an #Emacs user for a long time because it's just what I got used to. I had no particular loyalty to it.

The more I dig into org-mode though, the more I see it as its killer feature though. This alone is enough to keep me from ever switching to another editor.

Please note: if you like another editor better, that's perfectly fine. Use what works for you. For the love of God, I'm not trying to spark an Emacs vs. vim flame war.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

org-mode is too slow for me. I load it up like "I have to wait 20 seconds for a file to load? For this?" It's 2024 ffs
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

I keep not-quite fully embracing org-mode because I spend too much time outside of Emacs (e.g. on mobile devices). I probably just need to work out some scripting to dump into an inbox queue.

Plus work being absolutely inflexible about not letting work sync to anything else, though it helps enforce life boundaries. 😀

It's interesting how often the people who encourage you to "question everything" get upset when you question them.

Since we broke the pens out of storage, Katy's been taking up calligraphy. She's rather good at it too.

Anyhow, I cautioned her against using cheap paper with a #FountainPen because I've found it to be an unpleasant experience. Despite this, she's using a notepad from the dollar store. As it turns out, the paper is surprisingly good quality. No feathering or bleed through whatsoever.

Colour me impressed.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

@penfount some cheap paper is great, it's just a real crapshoot whether it will be even in the same brand/style.
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

generally, Vietnamese paper is pretty good for FPs. Vietnamese paper often shows up in cheap binder notebook paper or composition books, so I’m not surprised that it could show up in a dollar store notepad

So, while there is a #FountainPen community here in the fedi, is there a #teeline community?

@Seven ✨🍂✨ For me, it's part practical, part just because it's cool. I have ADHD and sometimes my brain runs faster than my hand can write. I tend to type notes, but I don't always have a keyboard handy.

I also like being able to write notes without having someone read over my shoulder... unless of course they happen to be a British journalist, which is unlikely in Canada.

I wonder how much hair pulling would be involved in switching to (and learning) Xmonad...

Is there a #YouTube frontend like #NewPipe that can be run on a #Debian system?

Both Piped and Invidious are pretty much dead now.

Well, it looks like FreeTube (as mentioned by a few people) seems to be doing the trick. Thanks for the input, everyone!

Despite having been an #Emacs user for years, I know I've only scratched its surface. I finally decided to start looking into org-mode (I blame @screwlisp for this) and, it's actually pretty damn cool.

My #ADHD moment of the day:

Eat a snack specifically because I have a medication that needs to be taken with food.

Forget to actually take the medication.

Is there an easy way to collaboratively work with org-mode files (especially from mobile devices)?

Note: I said easy. It can't involve git.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

Not want you want since it involves syncing to a remote Git repository but I discovered ZettelNotes recently which supports Org files, much more feature rich than Orgzly-revived or Orgro.

Once setup to sync with Git repo it does so in the background.

Not tried collaborating yet though as only I write my org/org-roam notes.

ZettelNotes : znotes.thedoc.eu.org/
Orgzly-Revived : orgzly.com/
Orgro : orgro.org/

@slackline :emacs: :orgmode: If the frontend is simple enough maybe. The idea is to be able to share notes (like our shopping list) with my partner.

I already have a Gitea server set up, but if the frontend is simple enough to abstract all the git nonsense away, it might work. I've never seen that simple a frontend for git though.

Our current solution involves Markdown files on Nextcloud.

Giving qutebrowser another go as my default browser.

Now I just have to remember how in the hell to use it.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

Hit my first snag: Nextcloud whines at me that my browser is "unsupported". I clicked on "continue with unsupported browser" and it let me in though. Apart from not detecthing the system's dark theme, everything seems to work properly so far.

So I've got my dedicated #BaystateBlue #FountainPen back to about 90% working again. I'm now leaving it soaking in distilled water for a few days to hopefully get the flow through the feed completely back to normal. I usually use regular tap water, but since our water's so hard here, I figured it was worth using distilled instead, especially since we still had some laying around.

ph
Sometimes I lie in bed putting off making breakfast because I have to test my glucose levels before I do. I fucking hate doing that. You'd think that in four years I'd have gotten used to it. You'd be wrong.

Just did some #teeline (shorthand) practice. Looking at what I'd written, you might think I'd suffered a stroke or something, but that's more or less what it's supposed to look like.

Now that I've broken out my #FountainPens again, I find myself wanting to take another crack at learning #teeline (shorthand).
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

So I've decided that I'll be giving my business to my local(ish) fountain pen store instead. It's a bit of a drive, but I prefer to support local businesses where I can.

Oh God,

I'm back on the Goulet Pens web site.

I'm normally pretty non-materialistic, but this never ends well for my wallet.

Is there a large #FountainPens community on the fedi?

Anyhow, I have a dedicated blue #Lamy Sarafi that I used to use for my #BaystateBlue ink, because it's notorious for permanently staining everything it comes into contact with. A while ago, I accidentally let ink dry out in this pen, and I haven't been able to get the feed flowing properly since. I've cleaned the pen several times and left everything soaking in water for several hours on a few occasions. I've also tried changing the nib. Eventually, I just emptied it, cleaned it out, and left it sitting on a shelf for a while.

I recently pulled it out again, cleaned it once more, and inked it up. Same problem. I'm going to leave it sit inked for a bit to see if maybe capillary action will eventually set in, but if this doesn't resolve the issue is there anything else I can try? I can always replace the pen, but I'd rather not if it can be avoided.

@Bearking I'll keep that one in my back pocket. I know the purpose of ink is to permanently mark things, but BSB is insidious!

If it weren't such a gorgeous colour, I'd have nothing to do with it.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

So someone elsewhere recommended soaking in a 10:1 water:vinegar solution. I've considered this, but don't know if it'll damage the feed. Thoughts?

Shannon Prickett reshared this.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

no, vinegar won’t damage the feed. But I’m not really sure it will help in this case. If you want something stronger than normal pen flush, try Rapido-eze. It’s designed for technical pens and can clean out some stubborn particles.
in reply to paradoxmo

@paradoxmo I've heard mixed responses about pen flush. Many have stated not to let a pen soak in it.

Shannon Prickett reshared this.

in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

if it’s standard ammonia-based pen flush, you should not keep the nib or the barrel submerged in it. You should fill the pen with it like you would with ink, and leave it there overnight. This is different than soaking.

Shannon Prickett reshared this.

in reply to paradoxmo

@paradoxmo Ohhhh! That's the part I wasn't understanding. I was just running it through the pen.
in reply to Jonathan Lamothe

vinegar is pretty safe in general and you can always dilute it. I think the safari has a plastic feed, too.

if it were me I would use a little dishsoap and an old toothbrush first and try to get into the feed's nooks and crannies. if the suds turn blue, it's working

in reply to Nick

@Nick Oh, there's an idea. I might give that a go if I can find an old tooth brush.
@Nick

Looks like the network cable that connects the server to the router is starting to fail. Have a replacement, but running it will be nontrivial. I expect it to be completed by the end of the weekend though.
