Haven't had McDonald's in a while, but Katy wanted it, so we got some. As a diabetic, my drink options are limited, but I opted for a sugar free cold brew coffee.

@silverwizard @Kevin Davy I get a specific brand of beans from Costco (don't remember the name but recognise the bag when I see it) and fresh grind them. I'm fortunate in that our tap water seems pretty good just on its own for hardness and so forth. The rest is just about the consistency of the measurements. (It was actually at your suggestion a while ago I started using a kitchen scale.)
I don't know that it's the best coffee in the world but given that pre-made cold brew is generally expensive and rather hit-and-miss for me, and this produces what I deem to be a consistently good cup of coffee at a fraction of the price, I've deemed it Good Enough for Me™.
@silverwizard Also, the recipe I adapted mine from said that a pitcher would keep in the fridge for up to two weeks. At first, I had no reason to doubt this because it never lasted me that long anyway.
I've since had to moderate my caffeine intake, and have learned to make less at a time because the quality seems to degrade a bit after about a week.

Yeah, that's shocking. I find coldbrew does better sweet than a lot - was it that it had a solid creamer you're missing out in? I use a squirt of stevia syrup these days (for complex reasons invovling too much stevia)
@silverwizard That could be what it was. I usually drink my coffee black with a little sugar-free syrup. I do change the syrups up from time to time to keep it interesting, though.
@Jonathan Lamothe I think coldbrew doesn't have the same flavour pop as hot coffee (which is why I use coldbrew for "coffee flavoured milkshakes") - and so you might be disguising a lot of complexity and not filling it in.

You know, it’s pretty irresponsible that these documentation platforms are starting to shove AI scribes and note writers down our throats without any mention that malpractice attorneys recommend against using these tools, and some even have started writing into policies that they won’t cover complaints related to use of AI

Btw I talked to my malpractice rep on Friday who reminded me that “HIPAA compliant” does not always = secure because HIPAA approved BAAs don’t mention AI tools at all so technically my EHR can do whatever they want with AI data and not be liable, but I am still liable for choosing to use them. So thanks TherapyNotes for never once mentioning this.

HIPAA is a placebo.
I was looking into online therapy, and the HIPAA standard at the time was an app called Bluejeans. I read the terms and conditions and they scraped and sold every bit of data but the actual content of my therapy session, and I couldn't find any clause that would prevent them from simply storing my session until they get the law changed.
HIPAA is like airport security. It's performative.

My GP handed me a piece of paper about their intent to use an AI scribe, about eight months ago. I read the paper, and noted that the concept of consent had not been mentioned. I said, "well, i guess as i haven't a 'NO' option, it'll have to be yes. Do i have a 'NO' option?"
She gave a big theatrical sigh (a 63-year-old woman!), and said yes, i could opt out. I indicated that i would do so. She said, a bit plaintively, "I just wanted to spend more time with my kids."
I said, "Respectfully, you are a doctor. You own your practice. If you want more time, make more time. You set the labour conditions here. And my opposition is twofold: 1) it doesn't work very well, and it makes up wrong information when it can't find an answer. 2) and you're giving away *my* data to train their planet-destroying magic eight-ball. Without compensation to me. You get "free" access to be their unpaid trainers and data providers, and they get my data, and the only person getting nothing is me."
Seeing i wasn't budging, and also a lack of useful rebuttal, she sighed again and got on with my appt.
I didn't mention to her the human job(s) she'd also destroyed in signing this "free" deal. Just a complete trainwreck of a decision. If i could reasonably get a new GP without spending far too long hunting up one who knows trans medicine, i'd be gone. I don't actually trust her judgement. She will probably get to using their "Doctor's Buddy" chatbot, to discuss my case with. I feel that is unfortunately likely, fr.
I don't know what it's realy called, but we all know it exists, to make helpful suggestions based on your private medical data it just ingested, and which she naively believes can be meaningfully anonymised for a small-population identity? Know my birthplace and my exact age, that i'm trans, my city, you can find my identity to match to my medical records (all online now) with your local data broker. I am an immigrant; my birthplace is likely unique here. Do the math.

#OpenSCAD question:
if in wanted to emboss text around the outer rounded edge of a cylinder, how would I go about doing that? I don't know how to transform an object on a curve like that.

There is no general way to roll up a shape like that. All solutions for text on cylinder just position each character independently with a for loop over the string, so each one is still flat and it only really works with fixed width fonts.
If each letter is separate, I guess you would just have each letter's separate normal be radial to the cylinder and dphi would basically just be the normal spacing between the letters.

Something that would solve this problem would be if the language supported a transform that would take a function as an input (either a name or some kind of lambda) that would take a set of coordinates as an input and return a modified set of coordinates. It would then apply this transformation to each vertex of its children.

One of the neighbours smoke detectors was going off for an extended period of time. Just as I was about to go investigate, it stopped.
I assume this either means it was a false alarm after all, or the smoke detector itself has been destroyed in the blaze. 🙃

It should come as no surprise to anyone who's been paying attention that I've grown disillusioned with capitalism over the past several years. What's interesting to me though is that any time I express this publicly, there are no shortage of capitalists who falsely assert that I am claiming that communism is the ultimate solution to everything. This is a false dichotomy.

I'm not used to seeing an 11/70 w/o the old style black and red switches. That looks more like a baby DECsystem 2020.
@mvilain it is a repacked 11/70 marketed as the decdatasystem-570 in a double wide shorter boy cabinet.

Thinking about it, my first serial-line terminal login on a SysV machine was back in January 1990, eons ago. It was a big tower case server with a 68020, and even then it was considered an older machine for legacy projects and unimportant enough to let newbs like me have a go at it. Your machine is about a generation or two older, and still running strong. Great job!

Hey #Unix folks recommend me your favorite games that can run in the terminal that aren't:
1) the most basic boring arcade stuff like snake or missile command
2) roguelikes/dungeon crawlers (love em but there's no lack of those)
3) chess, backgammon, etc., more meaty board games sure but there's already a million easy to find ways to play chess in a terminal
edit: 4) IF, I know where to find plenty of that, forgot this one
This is for my machine with no gui so when I say terminal I mean terminal not just like "text based and looks like it'd be in a terminal maybe".

Have you investigated interactive fiction? The game that has stuck with me as a good introduction to the medium was Photopia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photopia
There are likely many other on-ramps to text adventures, probably newer and better games, but I just thought that one had pretty colors 😉
@skyfaller I've played a decent amount of IF! I probably should have put that in the list too as stuff I'm covered on lol
@craigmaloney oh yeah I did add Mille Borne, I haven't played it yet but I've heard people say that Monster Maker (an 80s Japanese card game I have) is similar in the sense of trying to play distance cards to the right length and stopping other people from progressing. Just with a little more Gandalf (who in later printings got renamed to Gandawulf), so I've always meant to try that game digital or otherwise.

Also man I would absolutely love more like...turn based management sim kinda games, I'm looking for a good port of Oregon Trail for Unix terminals, and I've been enjoying checking out more evolved games that came out of Hammurabi, so games like this I would love recs for. I assume there's some form of Lemonade Stand out there too if I look. Gimme all the business/city sims you can.

I believe old versions of Dwarf Fortress have an ncurses mode which runs in the terminal. Dont think its supported anymore on the steam/itch release though, sadly.
(I hope DF doesn't count as a roguelike or dungeon crawler 😀 )
I think it's as simple as setting [PRINT_MODE:TEXT] in init.txt

Super Star Trek (although the version you get in modern Linux is unrecognizable to me personally), and text adventure / interactive fiction games like Colossal Cave Adventure and Zork.
The way you are asking you probably know about
bsdgames, but I wanted to specifically recommend hunt from there as a multiplayer shooter. Surprizingly fun for what it is. Only works in multiplayer though.
@timorl I grabbed it but haven't looked at everything in there, I'm also working on a pubnix for some local folks though and thought about putting it on there since I know it's on a lot of pubnix servers

A rewrite of a little word tile game I first wrote in 2011 inspired by the Wordsmith game in my first Tivo.
exceptionally cursed but: I once hacked a ncurses TUI display mode into a Gameboy emulator, using half-height unicode blocks to get 2 square-ish pixels per text character. worked badly, but worked nonetheless
unfortunately I don’t think I still have a copy I can share, but if you have the time and the know how it is both possible and very funny

@via unreachable The one in the Debian repositories can't. It looks like ASCII (actually CP437) but they're weirdly graphical tiles.
@via unreachable I didn't have an init folder under data. I added it and got the following when I launched it, I got the following error:
Display not found and PRINT_MODE not set to TEXT, aborting.
@me it looks like Debian moved stuff around; try editing /usr/share/games/dwarf-fortress/gamedata/data/init/init.txt
Change [PRINT_MODE:2D] to [PRINT_MODE:TEXT], and you should get curses output.
