It's very frustrating and discouraging when so many people think that their little tiny thing -- signing an online petition, wearing a certain color hat, sharing a meme -- is going to turn the world around. Especially when so many of these people fail to do the big things: vote, call their Senators and Congress people, attend Townhall meetings. It's the bragging about Slactivism that I'm against.
I think some of this disparagement activity is ratfucking sponsored by the Bad Guys.
It's kind of like the 1960s adage that the guy in your radical group who tells you you need to stop messing around with useless protests and get violent is the undercover cop.

Whether it's performative or not, a lot of uncertain people trying to find ways to engage with be lurking and would see folks being shot down for being perforative and then doubt themselves and their motives and be less likely to try something out of their comfort zone. It demotivates all around.

Patience.
For a lot of people, this is their first foray into non-compliance. They are going to start with small things within their comfort zone. This isn't a failure to do bigger things, this is training for it.
Self compassion.
If you are finding yourself angry at how little others are doing, you may be burned out. Rest is resistance too, as is pivoting to joy or humour in how you protest.

I would say it is more about the how able you are to inhibit thoughts from becoming actions.
Sometimes that means losing focus on a task.
Sometimes that means blurting out something you didn't mean to.
Sometimes it means fidgeting.
Sometimes it means the world is gone to you while you stay narrowed in on a really demanding task for hours... or consistently for days, weeks, years.
learning about hyperfocus was the thing that made me consider getting tested for ADHD.
I don't have trouble focusing, I just can't control where my focus goes, and I have zero sensory filters, so my attention goes all over the place when I get too many different stimuli.
It certainly doesn't help that all my senses are unusually sensitive.
I absolutely agree. I wish I had more control over my hyperfocus, because when it kicks in, I stop thinking and just start doing.
There might be a few neurotypical people who did awesome things, but honestly? Having ADHD helps so much doing these things... If only we had more control over it!
I have ADHD, diagnosed around 1995, and medicated at the time. I have a genius level IQ and can hyperfocus. Taking care of daily life? Not so good. 😂
My family always said that a bomb could go off and I wouldn’t notice if I had my ‘nose in a book’. Same thing with my life in Electronics and Coding. Now I write novels.
Apparently I ‘fake’ respond to conversations, but have no clue what anyone said, or that I did so. Fortunately, my better half understands that now and when she wants my opinion knows to interrupt whatever I’m doing and make sure I am focused on her instead of the task at hand.

Woke up this morning to a very large unexpected bill that needed to be addressed immediately. Managed to put the immediate fire out (or at least reduce it to a manageable simmer) but it took several hours of negotiating and it burnt essentially all of my spoons for the day. I should have just written the rest of the day off and done nothing else.
Katy and I decided to go run an errand anyway because we could turn it into a nice relaxing bike ride, which honestly sounded pretty appealing. Unfortunately, the errand went sideways and resulted in me having to spend another hour on the phone putting out another urgent fire.
I've done what needed to be done, but I know I'm going to pay a heavy price for overtaxing my system like that. The spoon tax is real.

Turns out I've been pruning my #BorgBackup archives wrong. There's a second step involved that actually deletes the "removed" data rather than just (presumably) removing the refrences to that data from the index. While I knew about this second step, I assumed that it was like how it works when you delete a file: the data technically remains intact, but gets overwritten by subsequent writes. Apparently I was wrong about this. I've been pruning—but not compacting—my daily backups monthly for years.
Long story short: I just spent an entire day compacting my backups. My backup storage just went from 71% full to 38%.
The change log might be an interesting read when upgrading.
IIRC, this was changed back then in 1.2.0 (for good reasons).

(Maybe look into recent history to see what Twitter eventually did and what happened to them. Rule of thumb: an API key is a key to a door you don’t own whose lock can be changed at any time.)

I have an unnamed family member who insists climate change is a hoax. A few days ago, we got an emergency alert about a tornado. I've lived through tornado watches in the past, but this was the first actual tornado I've ever encountered. He insists that this was fake news because he never saw it.
There was a funnel cloud sighting (with photos) on the major road that runs closest to his home.
I just didn't have it in me to argue.
In the late 90s, I remember everyone freaking out about Y2K. I knew how to write software, and I thought I understood the problem (and from a purely technical standpoint, I did). I wrote the whole thing off as people making a mountain of a molehill because surely no competent modern programmer would make a mistake like that, right? This opinion seemed validated when the year 2000 came and went without any apparent major incident.
Thing is, I was young, inexperienced, and naïve. I didn't understand a few things:
Now, with LLMs, we have a way to generate such code at scale, and I can't help but wonder about the price we're going to pay for it down the line, all in the name of shipping code on an arbitrary deadline.

Usually, I can resolve it by waiting an hour or so and trying again, but it's not a guarantee.
So I was able to commit to codeberg last night (technically this morning) at about 2AM. This made me strongly consider setting up a cron job that checks for un-pushed updates every hour or so and just automatically tries to push them if they haven't been.
This, unfortunately, would require me to leave an unencrypted copy of my private key on disk, which I'd rather not do. I know that openssl does this to facilitate TLS on my web site, but still...
Maybe I can create a special key just for codeberg and revoke it when this issue is resolved?

There are places where they go out of their way to make you feel welcome... others, not so much.
I have noticed that a lot of verified accounts on gaza-verified.org—particularly those on mastodon dot social—have been muted or otherwise hidden hidden by their servers. As much as I would like to help, my resources are extremely constrained of late. Since I want to help, but am not in a position to contribute financially, I figured the least I could do was to try to provide some additional visibility.
If you have the means, and are so inclined, I would like to remind everyone that they can always find a random profile on gaza-verified.org/people/ and donate directly to someone who could really use the help.

So my project where I'm trying to reverse engineer the charm stat in @SDF.ORG's Legion of the Rare Dragoon game has had some progress and some setbacks. I'm keeping a record of my in-game "purchases" along with my charm stat at the time to see how my charm affects my discount rate. I'm then building a table to try to project an estimated discount rate at various different charm levels.
Where I've succeeded: being able to automatically compute an equation that perfectly fits the collected data.
Where I've failed: The resulting discount table looks reasonable up until it gets to charm levels larger than the ones I've already recorded. Then it gets real whacky real quick.
I'm hoping that as I gather more data points, I'll end up with better predictions.

It occurs to me that I don't hear very many of you talking about this. The link is to a Red Flag Alert (their 3rd) about an impending genocide against trans people occurring in the United States of America.
The Lemkin Instititute for Genocide Prevention and Human Security is the organisation which has made the determination. That page explains the particular outlines of this attempt at genocide. And confirms that this attempt is happening.
This is why activists like me are running around with our hair on fire. In fact, it was seeing this coming if Trump won again that got me started working on asylum for trans people in January of 2023.
Yes. 2023. Almost two years before the election that brought Trump back, I started a petition to the Canadian government to help head this off.
M. Trudeau did not have any interest in doing anything about this, in his inspiring program of "sucking up to Trump in every snivelling way he could grind his nose into the orange gasbag's exhaust hole."
Mark Carney makes a big show of his Elbows Up theatrical bit, but he's just as authoritarian as Trump, he's just got actual social skills and knowledge and stuff, so he's doing it quietly and competently.
But he's still doing it.
This is why I want y'all, you Canadian trans folk, or indeed anyone trans or who loves trans people and lives in Canada, to contact your Member of Parliament. And just ask them to please advocate for this Safe Third Country Agreement to be suspended with regard to trans people from the US and UK.
I don't use the word genocide lightly. Ever. Even if I weren't truly convinced by the experts whose opinions I've read, all of which agree that that's what this is.
The Shoah gave us the idea of the Righteous Among Nations, people who risked, and often lost, their lives protecting Jews from the Nazis.
That's your role, cis folk. Righteousness. For us.

I've said this before, but it bears repeating.
I hear a lot of people expressing their dislike for all things "AI" and in general, I agree with them, but...
The problem I have is that "AI" is an ill-defined term. It's used as a hand-wavey buzzword to mean a whole bunch of different things. Mostly these days, it's pretty synonymous with LLMs and similar technologies, but it's actually a broader term than that. It's much like how the cryptocurrency industry appropriated the word "crypto", but I digress...
I've been dabbling with digital art lately. The idea of using "AI" to generate my art is extremely distasteful to me. That said, I do digital art because it affords me tools that I wouldn't have available to me otherwise. For instance, I, as a human, could not replicate the various filters I've applied, or the liquefy tool. That said, those tools don't need to destroy the planet and plunder the commons to be created. That's an important distinction to me.
The thing is, those tools could be argued to be a form of "AI" given the squishiness of the term to begin with. Also, I don't feel right about calling my art something like "100% human created", because a computer has (under my explicit direction) enhanced the work I've done.
There's a lot of nuance here that's difficult to express in a single post. At what point does the use of a tool overshadow the human involvement in an endeavour? To be honest, I don't exactly know.
I guess my issue, as is frequently the case, is that I get hung up on the precise meaning of words, and I lack a precise definition.
If people don't specify exactly what sort of AI they mean, I just take it as read that they're specifically talking about LLM (text, computer code) and Stable Diffusion (art).
Same thing with "crypto". If they don't specify exactly what they mean, I just take it as read that it's block-chain garbage.

I'm watching an 80s apocalyptic animated British film on YouTube.It aged well.
The characters are the whitest people on the planet. Just a little older than my parents, children of WWII, surviving WWIII.
Some are too young to remember when folks like that were the normal adult personality. It's the "this is fine" meme as a movie. The Don't Look Up of the Cold War era.
Bleak as it is mundane. Very artistic animation choices, very anti-war messaging, very left of center POV.
