Is there a good way to watch @peertube videos on a TV yet? There's increasingly stuff on there that I'd like to watch, but I don't like sitting at my desk to watch videos!

Katy wanted a fancy organizer for her alcohol markers but we didn't have the money for it. What I *did* have was a copy of #OpenSCAD and access to a #3DPrinter, so I made us a better one.
Pretty sure Rogers keeps disconnecting my internet in the middle of the night without notice to do some kind of maintenance hoping that nobody will notice.
I keep having to reboot the modem every morning for the past few days. This time I was awake when it went down.
Katy and I have randomly discovered sumo wrestling and weirdly gotten into it. The first thing I learned was that the people who deliberately get seating in the front rows are... brave.
It's all these dignitaries and rich people, those rows aren't easy to buy, and they get run over a lot. As do the judges, "Shimpan bowling" we call it.
I can't draw analogies like this. When I learned to program, it was by reading hundreds of printed man pages for TI-BASIC and MS-DOS. I have little hope that a 5yr old from today would do the same. I think if I didn't know how to program and had to learn that way today, I might not.
The old ways are not the new ways, and they aren't even that sacred. They are just barely the known.
@mkj I think there are still beginner guides out there, some free in general, some free via library. But, I find it hard to judge their suitability because of the "curse of knowledge". Unless my brain is compromised, I will never again not know how to double-click, e.g.
Went to a large grocery store and waitied in the parking lot with a book for a few hours hoping to pick up an Instacart order. Didn't get one, but as I tried to start the car to go home, I found that I'd left the lights on and the battery's dead.
Waiting on my father to show up with jumper cables, but at least I'm not so upset about not getting an order. Would've sucked to find the battery dead when I tried to deliver it...

I don't know if it's a generational thing or what, but dad would "go get takeout" when mom didn't want to cook. We'd phone in the order and he'd drive to the restaurant, pay for the food, pick it up, and drive it home.
@mvilain We still do that now, and it's not because of the fees. I'm not comfortable with a random stranger having access to my food. Yes, I know the folks at the restaurant have access to my food, but that's gonna happen regardless. And at least they're employed by the restaurant, not just some rando who's not trained to handle food and customers.

LLMs are not intelligent but they ARE good for spouting extruded text that mimics the zeitgeist of their training data and if that training data includes the overflowing sewer that is the unfiltered internet you're going to get gaslighting, lies, conspiracy theories, and malice. Guardrails only prevent some of it from spilling over.
Humans base their norms on their peers' opinions, so LLMs potentially normalize all sorts of horrors in discourseโprobably including ones we haven't glimpsed yet.
To be clear, that point about LLMs is a criticism of the training inputs. Which as far as I can see are promiscuously hoovered off the public internet by bots (like the ones perpetually DoS'ing the server my blog runs on this year) with zero thought given to curating the data for accuracy or appropriateness.

LLMs are the shitbrained version of the ML models that had been accelerating (and transforming entire research areas and industries for the better) until LLMs took up all the oxygen.
To your point, those ML models were built slowly and deliberately using vetted information, which is why they're truly miraculous.

So there's this Japanese sushi chef YouTuber that Katy and I have been watching. He does all kinds of recipes, but he keeps using this one ingredient I'm unfamiliar with. He calls it "salad oil". Is that a mistranslation of vegetable oil, or is this something else I'm just unaware of?
It's any unnamed vegetable oil that you would use to make a salad dressing; the key characteristic is that it doesn't have much flavor. It's often sold as a mix of whatever's reasonably cheap: soybean, canola, peanut, and in some cases, cottonseed.
You can substitute whatever you like, especially if you think the recipe would improve with avocado or olive oil.

Finally got my new glasses. Went with a pretty different style this time, but I like them. The old ones were two prescriptions old. It's nice to be able to see clearly again.

I need to request that *all* programmers remember that some of us are visually impaired and need to be able to edit the actual tar out of the font sizes for your menus, main bodies of your programs, etc. We need font resizing options, bolding options, color options, and font type options. For everything. If it's text, it needs to be able to be redone by the user. Also, that needs to be on a "global" and then a "per pane" basis, including the main area a person is working in.
Complaint trigger: All these M'Fkn' "Media Players" that are written for dinky little smart phones that no one over the age of 45 or 50 can even read hardly at all. I don't care that most of the people who download these things are around 12 to 25 years old. Some of us need to use these things in order to start or operate businesses and are *real grown ups.* We need these things but when we can't read them, they're useless to us.
Please fix this in every application on this planet. Thanks.

Also, being able to go into dark mode, or adjusting the colour as someone who is colour-blind. Really, these sorts of adjustments should be common place.

One could choose the size, shape and magnifying coefficient and be able to see what is needed, as well as click on it.

That also has stuff like timestamps. And in some links, such as on youtube.com/watch?v=videocode, the actually important part of the link is also after the ? (as opposed to on youtu.be/videocode).
When I get a link like that, I'll look up the canonical URL before sharing it further. It's not only a privacy issue, it's a special case of the URL shortener issue and messes up our collective internet heritage, as it is very unlikely that URL will be resolvable ten years from now, and the internet archives and national libraries out there won't know that personalized URL.

Granted, this isn't a youtu.be link, but only because that one already removes playlist, so it's not useful for sharing videos with their context intact.

Time is also important - I might be linking to a specific point in a 4h video, for example.
Those 4 are safe to cut, yeah, but "just cut off everything after ?" is straight up misinfo - that's how you end up with people sharing broken links

v doesn't have to be the first parameter + again, you stil have time and playlist. Like I said, time is important - maybe you're linking to a specific point in a 4h video essay, for example. Playlist is important if you're , say, sharing a music video from a soundtrack or album split into individual tracks per video rather than a single video for the whole thing.
So - again - you can't blindly remove things - know what is safe to remove and use common sense. Sometimes it's fine to omit both time and playlist (sometimes even desirable), often not.

@Shae Erisson It's a thing my doctor's been keeping an eye on for a while now. My heart rate will occasionally just spike for no apparent reason. I'm told it's "an electrical issue, not a plumbing issue" which is apparently far less serious.
At present, it's nothing more than a nuisance. I'm wearing the monitor for now to see of they can actually catch it happening to better diagnose, but in general, it doesn't affect my day-to-day.

@me Lockpicking is a crazy easy skill to pick up and learn the basics. We run workshops (usually for marketing events to get tech folks to show for a product pitch) and can teach anyone to pick in under an hour. It's a fun hobby that comes in super handy once or twice a year.

I've encountered an interesting bug in the @Nextcloud ๐ฑโ๏ธ๐ป client found in the F-Droid store. Whenever I use it to create a folder, the folder name is converted to lower case for some reason. I can fix this after the fact by renaming, but it's annoying (and kind of weird).

It's not an inconvenience, it's a sacrifice. Because I can't just turn around and make up for it by shopping elsewhere : it usually means that it's either not accessible, or more expensive... or both. And so it's not the company I boycott, but the very act of filling a need.

What I consume is already the bare minimum (and oftentimes less than that ; my bed broke in September 2022 and I still haven't been able to replace it). So while I can and do boycott Amazon, I could not boycott AliExpress.
And they never consider people who don't live in big cities (there are so many 'just do this...' that are entirely dependent on living in a big city).
I'm tremendously lucky that there's a greengrocer a few minutes' walk away. Most people don't have that. But where are the independent local businesses that I'm supposed to get everything else from? The sustainable refill shops that will allow me to reduce packaging? The market that lets me buy everything from farms? The shop that will sell me what I need to repair things that break?
I saw a post about boycotting a retailer the other day which mentioned that it was only a 4km walk to the alternative retailer ๐ They were only talking about themselves and not bugging anyone else so it wasn't a problem, it just really highlighted the difference in what is an "easy" alternative for people in different situations!

Scrollbars should be thick enough to grab easily with an ordinary mouse.
Scrollbars should be a part of the window decoration, NOT inside the content of the window.
Active titlebars and inactive titlebars should be completely different colors or brightnesses. Obvious at the quickest glance.
Client Side Decorations are stupid, I don't care how many people say otherwise, or how many times. They're just awful on so many levels.
All text should be of decently high contrast, and any text atop varying elements like videos should be outlined and/or shadowed for maximum visibility. No more stupid plain white text atop bright videos, you absolute station wagons.
Any program, whether gui or CLI, should be comfortable and usable in either light or dark mode, depending on the user's preference.
I think they're indispensable on floating WMs for common folk who don't yet understand the concept of Super+Button1/2 for dragging and resizing. @rl_dane
I really like title bars, they are a nice thick place to grab and yeet the window across the screen. (I dock a lot while I'm on video calls and sharing).
I would like to make two amendments to the great manifesto:
1. Tied to client-side decorations (which is greatly dislike), applications should never be able to override the presence of window borders. And, if they insist upon that, then the option to enable and set window border width must be mandatory.
2. Do not require pixel perfect placement of the active point of the cursor to resize or move windows.
I've definitely struggled with LibreOffice on that front quite a bit as well.
Also, Visual Studio Code (along with VSCodium and Theia IDE) is a royal pain, especially because it doesn't present window borders without enabling the native titlebar (which has it's own quirks and features). The problem there is losing vertical real estate, an already significant issue on 16:9 screens. ๐คฆ๐ผ
I have tried to use JetBrains PyCharm for my projects, but I feel like it's clunkier and slower than VS Code (which is already clunky and slow in its own right).
If I had the spare time, I definitely want to sit down and learn set up and use NeoVim to my liking. If/when that happens, I'll be more than happy to ditch VS Code.
I get most of these, but not the "scrollbars should be part of the window decorations" thing. What do you do for multiple scrollbars in a single window, like Masto's multicolumn UI?
Well, you can have scrollbars for content within a window, but it shouldn't be in-line with the content inside the window.
Basically, the way firefox worked in 2009 or so. I'm not sure when they made the change to the modern style of scrollbars where the scrollbar is inside the content being scrolled. It's stinking weird.
You see, the scrollbar is separate from the text/content being scrolled.
Now, it's an optionally disappearing element within the content being scrolled, so it gets in the way, badly, if you change the firefox config to have a decent-sized scrollbar.
*OH*, so what you mean is "no overlay scrollbars"?
That's not in the window decorations, it's still window content (as evidenced by the existence of that sidebar scroller there), but yeah overlay scrollbars suck! (We're on KDE and hardly ever see them.)
Any time I create an account where the password policy forbids a certain class of character I know I might as well just hand my PII over to the data brokers directly.
